Polaris Slingshot 2017

You will not find a better host than Jose!!! He met us at Hilo airport and his communication and flexibility are outstanding. We originally reserved the Polaris Slingshot but due to the weather (rained a ton the day before and day of the reservation), he reached out and offered us a different vehicle so we could enjoy our day! The Hyundai Elantra we wound up renting from him was an incredible vehicle and perfect for the sightseeing that we were doing today. Jose went above and beyond to make sure we had an amazing trip. Will definitely be coming back to him whenever we make it back to the Big Island!

Polaris Slingshot 2017

Jose is an awesome host. He was always prompt and responsive, and I felt like he was fully invested in my enjoyment of my vacation! He was even very kind and took me to different places around the island, and dropped me off at the airport! I highly recommending renting with Jose and look forward to doing business with him again in the future! As an aside, he has some really nice cars like the manual Slingshot I rented in his fleet and they are all spotless and clearly well maintained 😎 you won’t be disappointed!

Frequently asked questions in Keaau

Why choose a convertible for exploring Keaau's scenic routes?

A convertible car rental offers the perfect way to experience Hawaii's tropical climate while cruising through Keaau's lush landscapes and coastal areas. The open-air driving experience allows you to fully immerse yourself in the island's natural beauty, from the fragrant plumeria blooms to the sound of ocean waves. Rental convertibles provide an unmatched connection to Hawaii's stunning environment that traditional vehicle options simply cannot deliver.

How do you operate a convertible roof properly?

Most modern convertible car models feature electronic roof controls located near the center console or overhead, requiring the vehicle to be stationary and the parking brake engaged before operation. The roof mechanism typically takes between 15-30 seconds to fully open or close, and you should ensure no obstacles are above the car before activating the system. Always consult your rental car's manual for specific operating instructions, as different Nissan and Porsche convertible models may have unique procedures.

What safety tips should convertible drivers follow?

Always secure loose items before lowering the roof, as Hawaii's trade winds can easily carry away unsecured belongings during your car rental period. Wear sunscreen and protective eyewear when driving with the top down, especially during midday hours when UV exposure is strongest. Keep the convertible roof closed during rain showers, which can occur suddenly in tropical climates, and ensure all passengers wear seatbelts at all times.

Which Hawaiian destinations are perfect for convertible road trips?

The scenic drive along Highway 137 (Red Road) offers breathtaking coastal views and access to volcanic black sand beaches, making it ideal for convertible car adventures. Exploring the Lava Tree State Monument and nearby thermal pools provides unique geological experiences best enjoyed in an open-air vehicle. The route through Pahoa town showcases local Hawaiian culture and leads to spectacular lookout points where you can safely pull over and enjoy panoramic ocean vistas.

How should you pack for a convertible adventure?

Pack light and secure all items in the trunk or enclosed storage compartments, as open-top driving can create strong air currents that may displace loose objects. Bring a hat with a chin strap, sunglasses with a retainer cord, and a light jacket for cooler evening drives when the tropical temperatures drop. Consider waterproof bags for electronics and important documents, as Hawaii's weather can change quickly even during your car rental experience.

What weather factors affect convertible driving in Hawaii?

Hawaii's trade winds typically blow from the northeast at 10-25 mph, which can create significant air circulation in your rental convertible and affect comfort levels during longer drives. Afternoon rain showers are common in tropical climates, so monitor local weather conditions and keep the roof mechanism ready for quick closure. The intense tropical sun requires extra sun protection, and UV exposure increases significantly in convertible cars compared to traditional car options with solid roofs.

Is there unlimited mileage car rental on Turo?

Some hosts offer unlimited distance for a trip; others set a daily distance limit — you'll need to check on each rental car individually to see if this service is provided. On the vehicle pages, you'll see the total miles or kilometers you're allowed to drive under the heading "Distance included." You can find cars offering unlimited mileage with every trip by using the "Unlimited distance" filter.

How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

When booking a car in the US, you'll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that's right for you.
