Picking up at SAV

Pickup & return areas at SAV

Looking for the perfect place to pick up your car rental? Savannah Intl Airport is the perfect launchpad. Once you land, you'll find your rental vehicle parked in one of three approved locations: the Long-Term/Hourly Garage, Economy Garage, or SAV Value Park. If you're picking up your car in person, head to the designated Rideshare pickup zone on Melaver Drive instead of the curbside and you should have the vehicle keys in under 10 minutes.

Communicate with your host

Check the Turo app before you take off to confirm where to find your car — or to coordinate a meet-up if your host has arranged a face-to-face handoff. Real-time location sharing activates two hours before your trip starts, which is especially helpful if your flight's running late. When it's time to return, grab a new ticket, park in any approved spot, snap a photo of the stall, and lock the vehicle. Drop the keys in the lockbox (if any) or hand them off, then send your host the location details through the app.

Parking & airport fees

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport charges a delivery fee for rentals picked up or dropped off on airport property. Turo collects and passes this fee directly to the airport — no markups or surprises. If there are any additional parking fees before your arrival, it will be listed in your trip details so you know what to expect up front.

Forsyth Park, Savannah, GA

Forsyth Park

Start your day at the iconic Forsyth Fountain, where Spanish moss sways like a slow dance. Grab a lavender latte at Collins Quarter at Forsyth, then wander south into the Victorian District, where you'll find Victorian homes from the 1800s with wraparound porches and gingerbread trim that make every house feel like a page from a Southern storybook. Visit on a Saturday morning, and the Forsyth Farmers' Market greets you with sweet tea, fresh peaches, and local charm in every stall. With shaded sidewalks, blooming gardens, and plenty of spots to people-watch, this is Savannah at its most serene.

River Street

Roll down MLK Jr. Boulevard and descend the worn stone steps to River Street's cobbled riverfront. Here, you'll find everything from Benne wafers at Byrd's Famous Cookies to rooftop cocktails and neon lights at Electric Moon Skytop Lounge + The Moon Deck in the Plant Riverside District. Watch massive container ships glide past the Waving Girl statue as jazz spills out from nearby bars — and if the night's still young, why not catch a high-energy show at Savannah Smiles Dueling Piano Bar? This stretch of riverfront buzzes with history and nightlife in equal measure, making it a must-see after sunset.

Skidaway Island State Park

Just a scenic 25-minute drive from the downtown area, this lush coastal preserve is made for nature lovers. Winding boardwalks lead through salt marshes and maritime forests, while observation towers offer panoramic views of the surrounding wetlands. Keep your eyes peeled for herons, ospreys, and maybe even a fiddler crab or two along the shore. The Sandpiper Trail offers a breezy 2-mile loop through maritime forest, and the lookout tower’s worth the climb for a chance to spot ospreys overhead. Afterward, head to nearby Sandfly BBQ on Ferguson Avenue for pulled pork sandwiches and sweet tea.

Top tips for renting a car in Savannah

From oyster bars on Tybee Island to antique shops tucked into the mossy corners of Bluffton, Savannah invites you to explore at your own pace. Renting a car on Turo gives you the keys to the Lowcountry — literally. So, whether you're chasing golden-hour marsh views or hunting down the city's best praline, these car rental tips will help you hit the ground rolling.

How does airport pickup work at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport?

Want the most convenient place to collect your car rental? Savannah Airport is where it's at. Once you've grabbed your bags from the baggage claim area, follow the signs for the Parking Garages or Value Park lot. Check the Turo app for your vehicle's location — it should be in one of the designated rental car spaces — then use the ticket left in the car to breeze through the exit and onto the open road. Prefer an in-person meet-up? Head to the Rideshare pickup zone on Melaver Drive for a quick handoff with zero fuss.

How does drop-off work at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport?

A car rental return is easy — just return the car to one of the permitted locations (the Long-Term Garage, Economy Garage, or Value Park lot) and park in any open spot. Grab a fresh ticket, snap a quick photo of the stall, and send the details to your host through the app. If it's a remote return, lock the car and pop the keys into any lockbox (if provided). You can also meet your host in the Rideshare lane for a quick handoff and a smooth goodbye. No lines, no rental counter, just a simple return for your rental car.

How far is Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport from Downtown Savannah?

It isn't far at all. SAV Airport is just about 10 miles from the city center — about a 20-minute drive away, depending on traffic. So by the time others are still lining up or going through complicated rental agreements, you could be cruising past Forsyth Park or sipping on something sweet on Broughton Street.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Savannah?

Savannah's laid-back charm extends to its roadways, but you'll still want to stay sharp behind the wheel. Speed limits in the city usually range from 25–35 miles per hour (mph), while you can cruise up to about 70 mph on highways. Georgia's hands-free law means to keep your phone docked while driving, and don't forget the Move Over Law — if emergency or utility vehicles are pulled over, you need to shift lanes or slow down.

Weather-wise, it can shift quickly, especially in the summer. Sudden thunderstorms are common and can temporarily flood low-lying areas like Bay Street or River Street. In cooler months (November to April), expect dense coastal fog that rolls in during early mornings and can linger on until midday. Rural and scenic routes outside the city, like those near Skidaway Island, Wormslow Historic Site, or even Hilton Head, often bring deer around dawn and dusk.

Wildlife isn't limited to just the countryside. You might spot raccoons, wild turkeys, or even the occasional turtle crossing the road in marshy areas or near state parks. Always drive cautiously near wooded roads or water crossings, and be prepared to slow down if something four-legged — or shelled — wanders into your lane.

What is parking like in Savannah?

There are plenty of places to park if you know where to look. Metered spots can be found along Broughton, Bull, and Liberty Streets, but if you want easy River Street access, check out the Whitaker Street and Bryan Street garages — all just a short stroll from the waterfront. Planning a beach run? Tybee Island’s Beachfront and South Beach lots fill quickly, so aim to arrive early to score a prime spot near the sand.

Are there toll roads in Savannah?

Great news — no toll roads here! Savannah and the surrounding Lowcountry keep it simple so that from the airport to Hilton Head, you won't have to encounter a single toll booth. There are, however, express toll lanes on highways like I-95 and I-75, but they’re optional and accessible only with a Peach Pass. Most visitors can easily avoid them and stick to the free lanes without any issues.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Savannah?

Need to find a place to refuel? Check out Airways Avenue, Pooler Parkway, and Abercorn Street — each lined with plenty of gas stations for a quick top-up before returning your rental car.

If you're driving an EV, you'll find charging stations are convenient spots like the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, the Whitaker Street Garage, and the Robinson Parking Garage downtown. Several hotels, including The Thunderbird Inn and Aloft, also offer charging for guests.

Do I need to rent a car in Savannah?

If you're just sticking only to the Historic District, you might be able to get around by foot, but the real magic lives beyond the squares. With a rental car, you can chase golden-hour light through the marshes, detour to Bluffton for barbecue, or linger longer under Wormsloe's oak-draped archway long after the tour groups have gone. Trust us — having your own wheels in Savannah makes all the difference.
