Whether you're driving along Highway 278 in a Ram 1500 or cruising South Forest Beach Drive in a Nissan Z, your rental car gives you the freedom to explore Hilton Head Island and the surrounding areas. Prepare for your trip by reading these car rental tips.
Driving a rental car across Hilton Head Island is mostly hassle-free. The island is full of scenic roads, which makes for a more pleasant drive. Traffic is typically at its heaviest during rush hours and on Saturday morning when a lot of people are leaving the island. If you're driving to Hilton Head Island from another state, congestion often occurs on the stretch of Interstate 95 that goes through South Carolina.
The maximum speed limit in the area depends on where you're driving. On Business 278, the speed limit is usually 45 miles per hour (MPH). If you travel along the Cross Island Parkway, you can drive at a maximum speed of 55 MPH. However, the speed limit on William Hilton Parkway was lowered to 40 MPH in late 2024.
When you're planning a trip to Hilton Head Island, you must also account for the weather. Although winter weather is rare in town, several inches of snow fell in January 2025. During the summer months, your chief concern will be rain. Hilton Head Island gets six or more inches of rain in July and August. If you're not fully comfortable driving on wet roads, consider a rental car that offers superior traction, such as a Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class or Land Rover Defender.
Since Hilton Head Island is somewhat of a tourist destination, most of the parking spaces on the island are metered. There are, however, a couple of ways to obtain free parking. For example, you can leave your rental car at Coligny Beach Park for free. Keep in mind that the parking spaces fill up quickly.
If you have a vacation home on the island and are considered a resident, you may be able to obtain a permit that gives you free parking at all beach parks. On Monday through Friday, metered spaces cost $3 per hour for up to $15 per day. During the weekends, parking fees are a flat $20 per day. These fees are only enforced during the beach season, which lasts from March 1 to September 7.
There's currently just one toll road in South Carolina, the Southern Connector Toll Road. If you're taking a road trip across South Carolina, you might venture down this road. However, it's located near Greenville, SC, which is in the northwest section of the state and around four hours from Hilton Head Island. While the Cross Island Parkway on Hilton Head once collected tolls from all drivers, it was converted into a non-tolled road in 2021.
There are gas stations and EV charging ports all over Hilton Head Island, allowing you to fill up or charge your car whenever you need to. The most common gas station brands on the island are Circle K, Shell, and Exxon.
If you've booked an electric vehicle on Turo, the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort area hosts nearly 200 EV charging stations. You can charge your vehicle for free at more than 30 of these ports. DC fast charging is also available in six locations. The top charging networks in the area include Tesla Supercharger, ChargePoint, and Shell Recharge.
Like many coastal towns in South Carolina, it's possible to navigate some of Hilton Head Island by walking or utilizing the Breeze Trolley Service. For example, the Coligny area is highly walkable. However, there are only two trolley routes on the island, which means that a large portion of the area is difficult to access with public transportation.
Hilton Head Island is spread over nearly 70 miles of land and beaches. To get around efficiently, you need a rental car. With a vehicle, you can eat lunch at The Salty Dog Cafe along the south portion of the island before driving up to the Oyster Reef Golf Club in the northern section. This entire trip takes just 30 minutes by car.
