I returned the car on time. I wasn't aware of the additional step on the app that needed to be completed when returning the car. I was in contact with the owner and I only received a message to return the car by 12pm. Not to take pictures and check out on the app. Other than that, I barely drove the car but it was very necessary to have so thank you

Top tips for renting a car in Cape Canaveral

Having your own vehicle in Cape Canaveral unlocks adventures far beyond the launch pads and visitor centers. You could focus solely on the space attractions, but why stop there when the entire Space Coast awaits exploration? The pristine beaches stretch for miles in both directions, while nature refuges teem with wildlife that seems worlds away from the high-tech rocket facilities.

Ready to experience everything the Space Coast has to offer? These insider tips from locals will help you make the most of your Cape Canaveral adventure.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Cape Canaveral?

The roads stay in excellent condition year-round, and traffic flows smoothly except during major launches. Speed limits hover around 35-45 mph through town, rising to 70 mph on major highways like A1A and US-1. Watch for reduced speeds near Kennedy Space Center entrances and busy beach access points where pedestrians frequently cross.

Florida's Space Coast enjoys mild weather most of the year, but summer brings afternoon thunderstorms. A standard vehicle handles the terrain perfectly since the area is predominantly flat. Beach driving requires caution due to sand drift across coastal roads, especially after windy weather.

During a major launch, Cape Canaveral transforms from a quiet coastal community into a bustling spectacle. Traffic becomes heavy along all major routes, particularly US-1, A1A, and roads leading to public viewing areas. Launch day parking disappears hours before liftoff, with beachfront spots claimed by dawn. Secure viewing locations early or choose launch-watching spots accessible by foot from less congested areas. Also, observe and obey the rules near secure locations.

What is parking like in Cape Canaveral?

Parking around Cape Canaveral stays affordable and straightforward most of the time, except when rockets are scheduled to launch. Cocoa Beach has plenty of metered spots just blocks from the sand. For full beach days, municipal lots near major attractions offer reasonable all-day rates.

Launch days flip the parking situation upside down. Kennedy Space Center's official lots sell out weeks in advance and have premium prices. Beach communities have residential entrepreneurs renting front yards, driveways, and any available space within walking distance of prime viewing areas. Establish your viewing spot and parking strategy well ahead of major launches.

Are there toll roads in Cape Canaveral?

Most Cape Canaveral driving is toll-free, including routes to beaches, the Kennedy Space Center, and wildlife areas. The Beachline Expressway from Orlando does charge tolls. If you travel beyond the immediate area, expect tolls on Florida's major highways. Keep cash handy or make sure your vehicle has a SunPass transponder.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Cape Canaveral?

Gas stations are numerous along all paved routes. Fuel prices tend to be slightly higher in tourist zones but remain competitive. Top off the tank before heading to remote wildlife viewing areas where stations become less common.

EV charging stations are available at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, major shopping centers in Cocoa Beach, and some hotels along the coast.

Do I need to rent a car in Cape Canaveral?

Cocoa Beach and the immediate Kennedy Space Center area offer decent walkability, but public transit is minimal. To reach the best beaches, wildlife refuges, and launch viewing spots scattered across the Space Coast, you need your own transportation.

All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked.
