⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fantastic experience from start to finish! The truck was absolutely gorgeous—this red Ford F-150 is sharp, spotless, and drove like a dream. It was powerful, comfortable, and made every trip enjoyable. The host was equally impressive: friendly, responsive, accommodating, and made the entire rental process effortless. Communication was excellent, pickup and drop-off were seamless, and everything went exactly as expected. I couldn’t have asked for a better Turo experience. I will definitely be renting this truck again and highly recommend both the vehicle and the host to anyone looking for a reliable, head-turning ride. Five stars all the way!

Discover San Francisco's iconic attractions and scenic routes from SFO

San Francisco International Airport puts you within reach of some of California's most celebrated landmarks and breathtaking coastal drives. You can explore the legendary Golden Gate Bridge, wander through the colorful streets of Chinatown, or venture to the historic Alcatraz Island. The scenic Pacific Coast Highway beckons with its dramatic ocean vistas, while Napa Valley's world-renowned wineries offer perfect day trip opportunities. A rental car provides the elevated driving position and spacious interior that makes navigating San Francisco's famous hills comfortable while giving you room for all your travel essentials and souvenirs.

Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands adventure

The Golden Gate Bridge stands as San Francisco's most recognizable landmark, offering spectacular photo opportunities and breathtaking views of the bay. You'll find several vantage points along the Marin Headlands that provide perfect perspectives of this engineering marvel against the city skyline. The winding roads leading to these viewpoints are easily navigable, with ample parking available at most scenic overlooks. Your rental car's elevated seating position gives you commanding views of the bridge's iconic International Orange towers rising majestically above the often-misty waters below, making every moment of your journey memorable.

Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 waterfront experience

Fisherman's Wharf buzzes with energy as street performers entertain crowds while sea lions bask on the nearby docks. This historic waterfront district offers fresh seafood, unique shops, and stunning bay views that capture the essence of San Francisco's maritime heritage. Parking can be found in nearby structures, though arriving early helps secure better spots. The area's flat terrain makes for easy walking once you've parked, allowing you to fully enjoy the bustling atmosphere and waterfront dining options.

Lombard Street's famous curves and Russian Hill charm

Known as the "most crooked street in the world," Lombard Street features eight hairpin turns that wind down Russian Hill through beautifully manicured gardens and elegant Victorian homes. The street's unique design was created to reduce the hill's natural steep grade, making it safer for vehicles to navigate. While you can drive down this famous stretch, many visitors prefer to park nearby and walk up for the best photography angles. The surrounding Russian Hill neighborhood offers charming cafes and boutique shops perfect for exploring on foot. Your rental car handles the city's steep inclines with ease, giving you confidence to explore San Francisco's most challenging terrain.

Chinatown's vibrant streets and cultural treasures

San Francisco's Chinatown represents the oldest and largest Chinese community outside of Asia, featuring colorful pagoda-style architecture and bustling markets filled with exotic goods. You'll discover authentic dim sum restaurants, traditional herbal shops, and ornate temples that transport you to another world. The neighborhood's narrow streets require careful navigation, but nearby parking garages provide convenient access to this cultural gem. Dragon Gate marks the entrance to this fascinating district where East meets West.

Alcatraz Island and bay cruise opportunities

Alcatraz Island's infamous federal prison sits dramatically in San Francisco Bay, offering fascinating tours that reveal stories of notorious inmates and daring escape attempts. Ferry services depart regularly from Pier 33, making this historic site easily accessible for day trips. The island's audio tour, narrated by former inmates and guards, provides chilling insights into life behind bars on "The Rock." Advance reservations are strongly recommended, especially during peak tourist seasons. Your rental car provides comfortable transportation to the ferry terminal with plenty of space for cameras and personal belongings needed for your island adventure.

Your rental car may include toll transponders, so check before crossing any toll bridges or express lanes.

Should I rent a car from San Francisco Airport?

A car rental from San Francisco Airport works well for moving purposes, outdoor adventures, or hauling equipment around the Bay Area. San Francisco's steep hills and narrow parking spaces can make car navigation challenging in downtown areas. Consider your specific needs and destination when choosing between a pickup, van, or standard car for your San Francisco visit.

What are the most popular road trip routes from SFO?

Highway 1 south leads to spectacular coastal destinations like Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz, offering dramatic Pacific Ocean views. Heading north on US-101 takes you through San Francisco to wine country in Napa and Sonoma valleys. Eastbound routes via the Bay Bridge connect to Oakland and provide access to Central Valley attractions and Sierra Nevada mountain regions.

How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

No, you don't need personal insurance coverage to rent a car on Turo. In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host's vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan. When booking a car in the US, you'll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that's right for you. On each trip, you're covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.* In New York state, you'll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum.
