Between food, new friends, and finding the best Lincoln can show you, there's plenty to do in Star City. With so much spread throughout its 100.4 square miles, you're bound to end up behind the wheel at some point during your stay. Here are some tips to make the most of your car rental in Lincoln.
Most of Lincoln's roads follow a grid format, making navigation relatively simple most of the time. The majority of streets in the city have a speed limit of 25 MPH; you'll find these primarily in residential areas and business districts. Larger roads in less crowded areas may increase the limit to 45 MPH, with major freeways going even higher.
The city regularly closes roads to for repairs and improvements, so it can be helpful to consult the closure map on the City of Lincoln website. Spring and summer may see a few inches of rain, but it's more important to stay aware of weather if you're visiting during winter. Lincoln regularly sees snowfall once the temperature drops, and the city uses brine methods to help prevent ice before storms and then de-ice once the weather calms. Due to how low temperatures can get, the city does not tend to salt its roadways otherwise, so always drive carefully if a storm hits.
Like many metropolitan areas, you'll find ample parking throughout most of the city. Near the Lincoln Airport and downtown Lincoln, you'll still find plenty of space to park your vehicle, but you may want to be more strategic. The city offers Park-and-Go services on the Lincoln website to help you find parking lots, reserve event parking, and more. Most parking meters have a fee of $1.50 per hour, though this can vary depending on time limit. To make your parking experience simpler, you can download the Passport app and pay via smartphone instead of rummaging for change or pulling out a card.
Luckily, many parking spots near the capital are free! Along with plenty to see, do, and eat, free parking makes the capital a fantastic destination. Keep in mind, however, that free parking can come with one major caveat: walking. Depending on how busy the day is, you may have to mosey to your destination on foot. Don't worry—the skywalks give you easy access to Carriage Park, the Cornhusker, Union Bank Place, and more.
Rest easy: there are no toll roads in Lincoln itself. You'll only find toll areas—the Bellevue Bridge and the Plattsmouth Bridge—just south of Omaha, so unless you're headed to Missouri or Iowa, it's nothing to worry about.
Lincoln has plenty of gas stations throughout the area, from Sam's Club and Casey's off the beaten path to the U-Stop Convenience Shop just outside of Lincoln Airport. Along with ample stops along the 6 and the I-180, you're never too far away from a top-up.
Charging stations are another story. ChargePoint, Blink, and other providers have locations scattered throughout Lincoln, while you'll find two Tesla Superchargers on the 6 and one just north of Superior St. The highest concentration of EV chargers sits in downtown Lincoln, so you may want to factor a stop into your plans if you'll be doing a lot of driving.
A car rental in Lincoln is never a bad idea. The city's public transit system is called StarTran, with a downtown circulator and a variety of routes throughout the city. Stops can be few and far between, though, so unless you're primarily staying downtown, getting around may take a while. With how spread out Lincoln's attractions are, rental cars are your best way to experience the city.
