Top tips for renting a car in Wichita

Renting a car on Turo is the easiest way to skip the airport rental counter, choose the right vehicle for your trip, and start seeing the city on your schedule. To help you get started, here are a few helpful tips to make your journey in Wichita more seamless from pickup to drop-off.

How does airport pickup work at Wichita Airport?

Picking up your rental car at Wichita Airport is simple on Turo. Instead of lining up and wasting time at a car rental counter, you'll head straight from the baggage claim area to the parking lot where your host has parked your vehicle.

Most hosts will park the car in a permitted open parking area, like the Economy, Park & Ride, or Parking Garage. Simply check the Turo app to confirm the exact location before you arrive. They'll leave a parking ticket inside the car for you, so all you have to do is hop in and exit. For in-person handoffs, you'll meet your host at the Turo-reserved stalls in the Short-Term lot, just steps from the terminal.

How does drop-off work at Wichita Airport?

When it's time to return the rental vehicle, Turo makes it just as easy as pickup. For Wichita Eisenhower National Airport (ICT) car rental returns, you'll head to one of the permitted car rental return areas — Economy, Park & Ride, Short-Term, or the Parking Garage. Enter the lot, pull a ticket, and leave it in the car for your host to retrieve later on. Use Turo messaging on the app to share the exact location and stall number.

How far is Wichita Airport from Downtown Wichita?

Touch down, grab your bags, and you're practically there. Wichita Airport sits just six miles west of downtown, making it an easy 10-minute drive when traffic's light. Hop onto S Eisenhower Airport Pkwy, follow the signs for Kellogg Avenue, and you'll be rolling into the heart of the city before you even know it.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Wichita?

Around town, speed limits usually hover between 30 miles per hour (mph), while highways let you cruise at speeds of up to around 65–75 mph. Most drivers are polite, but keep an eye out and stay alert during rush hour, especially near downtown or busy intersections.

Weather-wise, Kansas likes to keep you on your toes. Summers can bring sudden downpours and powerful gusts of wind, while winter sometimes sneaks in a dusting of snow or ice. If the weather turns, just take it slow and keep an eye on bridges and open highways where things can get slippery fast.

Outside of a few bumpy patches after storms, the roads in Wichita are generally smooth. Just stay sharp if you're venturing beyond city limits, where deer and other wildlife sometimes wander onto the roads, especially around dusk. Otherwise, with a full tank and some good tunes, it's an easy place to kick back and enjoy the drive.

What is parking like in Wichita?

Parking in Wichita is surprisingly easy. Whether you're heading downtown for dinner or visiting local gems like the Old Town district, you'll usually be able to find a spot without too much hassle. Street parking is available throughout the city, with metered spots in busier areas and public parking garages and lots like those along First Street, Topeka Street, and 3rd Street, offer plenty of spaces close to restaurants, shops, and events.

Are there toll roads in Wichita?

Yes, but only if you're heading onto the Kansas Turnpike (I-35). While much of Wichita itself is toll-free, the Kansas Turnpike runs right through the city, and you'll hit tolls if you use it to get around or travel further out north towards Topeka or south towards Oklahoma City. That said, for everyday driving, in and around central Wichita, you can usually stick to city streets and highways without passing through a toll booth. Just check your route ahead of time to make sure before you hit the road.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Wichita?

Fuel stops are everywhere in Wichita, so you'll never be far from a quick top-up. Popular spots line major streets like Kellogg Avenue, Seneca Street, and Rock Road, making fill-ups fast and easy.

Driving electric? No problem. Wichita has a growing network of EV chargers, with options along both Kellogg Avenue and Rock Road, at hotels like the Hyatt Regency and the Holiday Inn. You don't have to worry because there are plenty of choices to keep you powered up and ready to roll.

Do I need to rent a car in Wichita?

To really experience Wichita, having your own car makes all the difference. Attractions like Botanica Wichita, Sedgwick County Zoo, and even local favorites like Bradley Fair are spread out enough that a rental makes getting around easier (and more fun). Plus, with scenic drives, charming small towns, and spots like Cheney State Park just beyond city limits, a rental car gives you the freedom to roam without relying on schedules. Turo puts you in the driver's seat so you can explore Wichita your way.

* Any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your protection plan, except in limited situations for trips booked in Maryland, but this protects your own wallet. Liability insurance is provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. The policy does not provide coverage for damage to a host’s vehicle.

For questions or information about the third party liability insurance that is included in protection plans, consumers in Maryland and the licensed states listed here may contact Turo Insurance Agency at (415) 508-0283 or claims@turo.agency. For questions about how damage to a host’s vehicle is handled, visit the Turo Support site.
