Exploring the soul of Louisiana is best done with the freedom of your own ride. From city landmarks to out-of-town bayou trails, having your own set of wheels lets you move between experiences with ease. Before heading off near Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, here are a few tips to help make your car rental process smooth and stress-free.
Most pickups occur just outside the terminal at Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, in nearby lots along Veterans Memorial Boulevard. Once your trip is confirmed, the Turo app will guide you to your rental car's exact location.
Returns are typically made at the same off-site location you picked up from, unless your host shares an alternate drop-off location in the app. Bring the car back with all personal items removed, and drop the keys as directed. Some hosts offer flexible after-hours returns, so double-check your trip notes.
Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport is about 7 miles from downtown, making the drive a quick 15 minutes under normal traffic. Skip long lines at traditional car rental companies and get straight to exploring hot spots like the USS Kidd, Riverfront Plaza, and the Old State Capitol.
Baton Rouge’s main arteries — including I-10, I-12, and Airline Highway — tend to bottleneck during weekday rush hours and LSU event days. Traffic builds near downtown and along Highland Road, particularly in summer when roadwork is common.
City speed limits sit around 25–35 mph, while highways stretch up to 70 mph. State law requires hands-free phone use and seatbelt compliance for all passengers. Visitors should double-check any applicable laws that differ from their home state.
For longer drives or all-weather comfort, booking a spacious vehicle is your best bet, such as a large SUV.
Downtown street parking is metered and often full near popular spots like the State Capitol or Riverfront Plaza. The Galvez Parking Garage and Third Street Garage are convenient options near cultural hubs, with room for all vehicle classes.
Most lots accept cards, but always check for signage listing acceptable forms of payment — meters and machines can vary block to block.
There are no toll roads in Baton Rouge itself. The nearest tolled route is the LA 1 Expressway toward Port Allen, often used for travel to the Gulf Coast.
You'll find gas stations concentrated along Florida Boulevard, Airline Highway, and Essen Lane, with options like Chevron, Exxon, and Circle K. These areas offer plenty of coverage for both locals and visitors heading toward downtown or LSU.
EV drivers have several charging options, including ports at the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, Mall of Louisiana, and select hotels. This makes the city a convenient place to rent newer vehicle classes — including hybrids or electric — depending on availability and your travel plans.
Landmarks like the Bluebonnet Swamp, False River, or plantation homes along the Great River Road are only easily reached by car. Renting through Turo gives you access to flexible vehicle classes, easy local navigation, and the freedom to discover hidden gems beyond the city limits — minus the rigid schedules or rideshare waits.
From the Spanish Town Parade to sunset drives along River Road, Baton Rouge calls for a car that matches the moment. Filter by size, style, or take advantage of travel club discounts available through select listings for added value. Choose from the following rental vehicle classes, including but not limited to:
- SUVs: A practical pick for exploring Bluebonnet Swamp, tailgating at LSU, or running errands around town.
- Premium and luxury cars: Turn heads in upscale picks like the Cadillac Escalade, BMW X7, or Audi Q7 — perfect for client meetings or date nights downtown.
- Electric cars: Drive clean and quiet through the Garden District or Mid City with options like the Tesla Model Y or Audi e-tron.
- Performance sports cars: Want something with a little bite? Think Ford Mustang or similar for spirited drives down River Road.
The cost of car rental in Baton Rouge can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rentals in Baton Rouge, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.

Liability insurance is provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. The policy does not provide coverage for damage to a host’s vehicle.
