Edinburgh Castle sits high on its Old Town rock, and you can reach it on foot once you're in the city. The real reason to have your own car is everything past the ramparts — the Highlands, the coast, and the string of castles and glens that trains and buses can't reach on your schedule. With a car, the view from the battlements becomes the start of the trip, not the whole of it.
From the castle, a car opens up Rosslyn Chapel to the south, Stirling Castle to the north-west, and the wide beaches of the East Lothian coast to the east. It also makes a quick run west to Glasgow an easy afternoon rather than a logistical puzzle. You choose where to go and when, without waiting on the next departure.
Booking on Turo is refreshingly simple. You browse cars near Edinburgh Castle, pick the dates you need, choose a pickup point, and book — then collect the car and go. Many cars can be delivered near the castle or the city centre, so you can start your trip minutes from the Royal Mile.
For wider reach, you can also book car rental in Edinburgh and use the city as your base for day trips across Scotland. It's the practical way to pair a night in the capital with a morning in the hills.
Whatever brings you to Edinburgh Castle, there's a car on Turo to match the trip. The right choice depends on how far you're going and who's coming along. From a weekend in the Old Town to a slow tour of the glens, matching the car to the plan makes the whole trip easier.

Enter a date and location in Edinburgh Castle, Scotland (or beyond), filter to find the best car for you, and read reviews from previous renters.

Your host sends you pickup details, and you’re all set to hit the roads of Edinburgh Castle, Scotland! If you have questions, you can easily chat with your host or contact support.
A very good rental! Drove all around Scotland without any problems. We were a group of four people going for camping around Scotland, and it all fitted nicely in the car with the roof box. The owner responded quickly on my questions, and there was not any issues with the car. I can only recommend renting this car if you are going for a road trip!
We had a wonderful day exploring the highlands because we were able to rent a car from Shahzad! He was wonderful to communicate with. We had some difficulty working the hybrid style, as it is different than what we were used to, and he called within minutes to help us. I would absolutely rent from him again!

Amazing car. Perfect for my trip to Liverpool. Guitar is a great host, extremely friendly and helpful. Drop off was simple and easy, returned early and guitar was great at responding and handling the drop off
My trip with Stephen was not straightforward but none of it was of his making. Some confusing, night before pick-up issues, over whether his Merc was ULEZ compliant turned out to be the DVLAs fault; Stephen was totally transparent with me and immediately offered me a different car. The Ioniq was in great condition, spotlessly clean and we had a great trip.

Great trip with Ibrahims car. Car was in good shape, suitable for trip to Highland. Ibrahim is accommodating and pleasant.

We had a good experience with this car! It was in great condition, with clean interior. Android Auto and the speakers worked well, which made our road trip comfortable. The host was friendly, communicative, and quick to respond throughout the rental, making everything hassle-free. Overall, the car was comfortable, reliable, and good to drive. We’d definitely recommend it and would happily rent it again!

Good car. Smooth drive. Performed well. The navigation system was vital driving around the countryside.

Owner was quick to communicate and was very helpful. Car was great. Highly recommended!

Host reviewed car with pick up of the car. Would definitely recommend others to use this hybrid car, and super host.
Everything went smoothly, the car provided was really nice. I deeply recommend.

Perfect! Easily the best car rental I've ever had in multiple countries. I'll never rent from the big companies again. Professional and kind.
Perfect host and a perfect car! Kris was very nice and gave clear, straightforward instructions for pickup and return. The BMW was in great condition and everything went smoothly. Would definitely recommend!

Great car with no issues. Easy pickup and drop off. Communication was great. Would highly recommend!

Lovely car! And Stephen was a great host! Easy communication, pick up and drop Off was extremely easy and convenient! Highly recommended
Rent a car and explore Edinburgh Castle, Scotland

Rosslyn Chapel is a richly carved 15th-century chapel in the village of Roslin, roughly seven miles south of the castle. Its stonework rewards a slow, unhurried visit, and the surrounding countryside makes the short drive a pleasure in itself. Direct public transport is limited, so a car — with on-site parking at the chapel — is the easiest way to arrive on your own timetable.
Stirling Castle is a commanding hilltop fortress about 37 miles north-west of Edinburgh, and it pairs naturally with a day built around Scottish history. With a car, you can leave early and spend the morning on the ramparts. You can even add a stop at the Kelpies or Loch Lomond on the way back. Leaving under your own steam is what makes that kind of full day possible.
North Berwick is a breezy seaside town about 25 miles east, with sweeping beaches, the cliff-top ruins of Tantallon Castle, and the Scottish Seabird Centre. A car turns the coast into a proper day out, letting you string several stops together at your own pace. Parking is far easier out here than in the city centre, so you can pull in wherever the view is best.

Enjoy a streamlined airport experience
100+ airports across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and France let Turo hosts bring cars to airport parking lots and garages. Some smaller airports even allow curbside pickup at the terminal.*

Liability insurance included
Choose from three protection plans — Premier, Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. Spring for Premier for peace of mind (eligibility requirements apply), or pay less for lighter protection with higher out-of-pocket costs for vehicle damage or theft.*

Relax with support & damage protection
Customer support is always available to answer your questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is just a call away.
For a holiday that starts at the castle and stretches into the Highlands and coast, comfort and space matter. An SUV rental gives you room for luggage, walking boots, and passengers on the longer drives north. It's a comfortable, capable choice for days spent covering ground between Edinburgh and the hills.
Arriving for a wedding, a milestone birthday, or a night at the Fringe or Hogmanay deserves a car that fits the moment. A luxury car rental lets you pull up near the castle in something memorable. It's an easy way to make a special day in Edinburgh feel like one.
If you're settling in for a month or relocating, long-term car rentals keep you mobile without a daily scramble. Extended bookings suit slow Scotland tours, remote-work stints, and relocations based in Edinburgh. You get the freedom to explore on weekends and run errands during the week.

Forget the traditional rental counters. On Turo, you can have a car delivered right to you. Whether you're arriving at the airport, staying at a local hotel, or beginning your trip from downtown, Turo offers flexible options to match your schedule and make pickup hassle-free.
Edinburgh Airport is the nearest airport, about eight miles west of the castle and the natural place to start if you're flying in. Book a car at Edinburgh Airport (EDI) and pick it up soon after you land. From there you can drive straight into the city or on towards the hills. It saves you a transfer and puts you in the driver's seat from the moment you arrive.
If you're staying near the castle, you can arrange pickup or delivery close to Waverley station, the Royal Mile, or a city-centre hotel. Keep in mind that the Old Town sits inside Edinburgh's low emission zone, so confirm your car meets the standard or arrange delivery just outside the zone. That small check keeps your first drive smooth.
For stays north of the centre, Leith and the Ocean Terminal area make a handy pickup point with easier parking than the Old Town. It's well placed if you're heading straight for the East Lothian coast or the road north. You can collect the car and be on the coastal road in minutes.

Next time you fly, don’t wait in line and fill out forms — pick your car up at hundreds of popular airports.
Rather than hustling at the busy terminal curbside, take your time picking up the car at approved parking lots or garages. Check in, load up your luggage, and get comfortable with the car without a big rush.
Skip the rental car counter at hundreds of popular airports without waiting in line or filling out paperwork. Find and pick up the car with the app and hit the road in no time.
Cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before your trip starts, unless you opt to receive a non-refundable trip discount when you book. Because life happens and it helps to be flexible when it does.

In Scotland you drive on the left, and speed limits are posted in miles per hour. Much of central Edinburgh runs at 20 mph, rising to 30 on wider urban roads and 60 or 70 on rural roads and motorways. The Old Town streets around the castle are narrow, steep, and often cobbled or pedestrianised, so take them slowly and expect walkers everywhere.
Parking in central Edinburgh is limited and pricey, with metered, controlled bays across the Old Town and New Town. Your easiest option is a car park or park-and-ride just outside the centre, then walk or take the tram in. Out in North Berwick or Stirling, parking is far simpler, which is part of what makes a car worth having.
Good news for your budget: Scotland's motorways and major bridges are toll-free. You can cross the Queensferry Crossing or the Forth Road Bridge on your way north without paying a charge. That keeps day trips out of the city refreshingly straightforward.
Petrol stations cluster around the city fringe and along the main routes out of Edinburgh, so top up before you head into the hills. Charging is plentiful too, and electric vehicles are exempt from Edinburgh's low emission zone — a real advantage in the city centre. If you book an electric car, plan a charge before longer runs north or west.
Not to see the castle itself — the Old Town is compact and walkable. You'll want a car for everything beyond it: the Highlands, the coast, and day trips to places like Dundee that are slow going by public transport. If your plans reach past the city, a car is what makes them realistic.
You need a full, valid physical driving licence and a confirmed booking on Turo. International guests should also carry a passport or photo ID. Bring the physical licence itself, as a digital version isn't accepted.
You need a full, valid physical driving licence. That means a UK or EU licence held for at least one year, or another country's licence held for at least two years. Digital licences and provisional or learner permits aren't accepted.
The minimum driver age is 21, with no upper age limit beyond 74. As long as you meet the licence requirements, you're eligible to book a car near the castle.
Protection plans are offered when you book a car on Turo, so you can choose a plan as part of the booking. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply, and you can review the details before you confirm.
Yes — weekly and monthly bookings often come with a lower daily rate than booking a single day at a time. If you're staying a while, longer bookings are usually the better value.
Yes. You can book monthly and long-term rentals for a month or more, which suits relocations, extended stays, and slow tours around Scotland. Longer bookings often come with reduced daily rates, too.
Sometimes. Some cars on Turo include unlimited miles, while others offer it as an added Extra you can select at booking. Check the individual listing to see what's included before you book.
Yes, additional drivers can be added to your booking. Add them yourself in the Turo app so each driver is approved before your trip. Every additional driver needs to meet the same age and licence requirements.
Prices vary by car, dates, and how long you book, so the best way to see real costs is to search your dates on Turo. Everyday cars generally cost less per day than premium or luxury models, and weekly or monthly bookings usually bring the daily rate down.
You'll find a wide range of cars on Turo to match your trip, including:
SUV — spacious and comfortable for Highland day trips, luggage, and larger groups.
Electric vehicle — quiet, efficient, and exempt from Edinburgh's low emission zone.
Van — extra room for groups, gear, or a move across the city.
Minivan — seating for larger families and groups travelling together.
Luxury — a memorable choice for weddings, celebrations, and special arrivals.
Yes. You can book a car by the month around Edinburgh, which works well for long stays, relocations, and extended tours. Monthly bookings often carry a lower daily rate than shorter trips.
