Top tips for renting a car in York

Planning ahead can make all the difference. These handy tips will help you avoid peak traffic, find the right parking spots and hit the road with confidence while exploring the historic York city and its scenic surrounds.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in York?

Driving in York offers a peaceful alternative to larger cities, but the narrow lanes of the city centre and surrounding villages call for attentive handling. Key arteries like the A64 and A19 see moderate congestion, especially around rush hours from 8:00–9:30 AM and 4:00–6:00 PM. If you're heading to Leeds, expect heavier traffic on weekday mornings.

The city enforces a 20 mph speed limit in many central zones, especially in residential and school areas. Outside of this, national limits apply — 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Be mindful of frequent pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes, particularly near the University of York and the train station.

Seasonal conditions can also impact your drive. York occasionally experiences light snow in winter, which may slow travel along rural roads leading to surrounding towns. Planning ahead with weather updates and knowing alternate routes through the city can help maintain a smoother journey.

What is parking like in York?

While parking in the historic core can be limited, several car parks provide convenient access to the city. Bootham Row, Castle Car Park and Monk Bar are popular options, often used by travellers exploring the Shambles or York Minster. These lots fill quickly during school holidays and weekends, so early arrival is recommended.

Outside the centre, Park & Ride facilities offer stress-free alternatives, with frequent shuttles into the city. They’re a popular choice among visitors wanting to avoid navigating tighter streets or peak-time congestion.

Are there toll roads in York?

There are no toll roads in or around York. Most roads, including the A64 and nearby motorways, are free to use.

Are there petrol stations and EV chargers in York?

You’ll find a number of petrol stations on main roads like Hull Road and Malton Road, many offering pay-at-pump options. For EV drivers, charging stations are available at Monks Cross Shopping Park, Poppleton Bar Park & Ride and Foss Islands Retail Park. The city is steadily expanding its charging network, making electric rentals a viable choice.

Do I need to rent a car in York?

While York’s historic centre is best explored on foot, hiring a car unlocks the city’s broader beauty — from Helmsley Castle to the wild moors of North Yorkshire. Many of the best sights sit beyond the train lines, and with Turo, it’s easy to find a car suited to your journey and travel at your own pace.
