In Manchester, the UK’s standard driving rules apply — drive on the left-hand side of the road, stick to speed limits, and follow traffic signals. Keep an eye out for congestion charges, bus lanes, and restricted zones in the city centre.
Roads can get busy during rush hours, especially the M60 and A538, so it’s important to plan your journey accordingly. Also, as Manchester is home to one of the busiest airports in the UK, congestion can build on Ringway Road and Hale Road, so it’s wise to allow extra time if you’re travelling to catch a flight!
In winter, roads around Manchester can be icy, foggy, or slippery from rain, which can make driving more challenging. Reduce your speed, leave extra stopping distance, and use dipped headlights in fog. Keep an eye on travel news and weather forecasts, as conditions can change quickly.
If you’re looking for underground parking or multi-storey car parks in central Manchester, the most popular and convenient options are NCP Manchester Central and NCP Oxford Street. There’s also Q-Park Piccadilly Gardens / Piccadilly Place, close to Piccadilly Station, and Arndale Centre Car Park, ideal for shopping with direct access to the shopping centre. Most of these car parks offer 24/7 opening hours, providing secure, covered parking in the heart of the city.
There are also popular on-street parking options, including Deansgate, Cannon Street, Cross Street, College Street, Chapel Street, and Chorlton Street — as these are mostly only available for a short stay, they're ideal for quick visits or running errands.
Manchester city centre has no toll roads, with the main one being the Warburton Toll Bridge in Greater Manchester. For the most part, tolls are not a problem when driving in and around Manchester. If you want to avoid toll roads entirely, plan routes on main roads and motorways.
Manchester makes it easy to refuel or recharge while you’re on the move. Petrol stations are conveniently scattered along main roads, ring roads, and near motorway junctions, as well as around shopping centres, retail parks, and larger supermarkets.
For electric vehicles, chargers are commonly found in supermarkets and retail car parks, central city car parks, and near transport hubs like train stations and the airport, with a mix of standard and rapid chargers.
Yes, hiring a car in Manchester is a great idea if you want the freedom to explore at your own pace. While public transport and shuttles run around the city, having a hire car means you don’t have to wait at a bus stop or stick to strict timetables — perfect if you’re on holiday with limited time. With a rental car, you can easily take day trips to nearby cities or enjoy the stunning landscapes of the Peak District. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even drive further afield, all the way down to London or up to Edinburgh, making the most of your trip without being tied to schedules.
