Bryan and this truck were a Godsend! The truck fit our whole family and all the stuff we had to haul towing two kids and a baby with room to spare. We were so comfortable in it all week! We were worried about making sure our baby had everything and if we’d have enough luggage space to bring the things we’d need for the beach, but Bryan provided literally everything we needed. My wife and I were over the moon when we saw all the additions to the truck at no extra charge. We didn’t even need to bring a carseat! He had a very nice one (that our baby now prefers over her’s 😅) and it was already installed upon arrival. Beach towels, beach wagon and umbrella, cooler, snorkel gear, and more. These extras were truly the cherry on top of an already great experience! Not to mention, Bryan was an incredible host. Not only was he available for questions about the island all week, but he made the most beautiful and thorough guide to Kauai about anything you could possibly have questions about. We had so much fun going through it, looking at the pictures, and revamping our itinerary because of it! Our trip would have looked so different without Bryan and this sweet F-150. There is not one chance we’d book with anyone else when we come back. After all the horror stories I’ve read about long rental car lines, save yourself the trouble and get the best experience here!

Definitely worth it the truck says 2014 but it’s very clean drives great and it’s a truck on an island which is perfect. The gas is also surprisingly very good. It’s not a full double cab so if you have tall people, it is tight in the backseat, but having a truck bed makes it worth it. Especially in Hawaii, where people can sit in the back. Will definitely recommend very easy process. To pick up you just walk to the end of the airport and their shuttles takes you to target in the same process to drop it off. You go back to the parking lot and the shuttle will pick you up from there.

Our first time using Turo so Benson was very patient with all my questions. Good reliable truck and really great option on the island considering a lot of places you have to park on the side of the road. 10/10 recommend.

Nice truck. Worked great for the family vacay to drive all around the island and really nice having a locking bed. We also got toys, car seat, cooler and body boards which were already in the truck and ready to go when we wanted at various stops. So convenient!

Waimea Canyon State Park adventure

Waimea Canyon stretches across Kauai's western side, revealing layers of red and orange rock formations carved over millions of years. The scenic drive through the canyon offers numerous lookout points where you can capture breathtaking photographs of this geological wonder. Several hiking trails wind through the area, leading to hidden waterfalls and panoramic vistas. Your rental car provides excellent visibility for taking in the dramatic landscapes while comfortably navigating the winding mountain roads. Parking areas are available at major viewpoints, though they can fill quickly during peak visiting hours, making early morning visits particularly rewarding.

Poipu Beach relaxation and water activities

Poipu Beach ranks among Hawaii's most beautiful coastal destinations, featuring golden sand and crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The protected bay creates calm conditions ideal for families, while nearby Brennecke's Beach offers excellent bodyboarding opportunities. Local shops and restaurants line the area, providing convenient dining and shopping options. The drive from Lihue takes you through scenic sugar cane fields and charming residential areas, offering glimpses of local island life along the way.

Na Pali Coast scenic viewpoints

The Na Pali Coast showcases some of the world's most dramatic coastal scenery, with emerald peaks rising directly from the Pacific Ocean. While the coastline itself remains accessible only by boat or helicopter, several roadside viewpoints offer spectacular perspectives of these ancient cliffs. The Kalalau Lookout provides particularly stunning views, especially during golden hour when the light illuminates the ridges and valleys. Your rental car ensures comfortable travel along the mountain roads leading to these elevated vantage points, where you can witness the raw power and beauty of Kauai's northern shore while enjoying the spacious interior and commanding road presence.

Hanalei Bay and historic town exploration

Hanalei Bay curves gracefully along Kauai's north shore, framed by emerald mountains and dotted with traditional Hawaiian fishing boats. The historic town maintains its old-world charm with wooden storefronts housing local boutiques, art galleries, and casual eateries. Hanalei Beach offers excellent conditions for surfing, swimming, and simply relaxing on the sand. The scenic drive includes crossing several one-lane bridges that add character to the journey while providing glimpses of taro fields and tropical vegetation.

Wailua River and Fern Grotto experience

Kayaking excursions navigate upstream through lush vegetation toward hidden waterfalls, while boat tours visit the famous Fern Grotto, a natural amphitheater draped in native ferns. The area holds significant cultural importance in Hawaiian history, with ancient temples and royal grounds scattered throughout the valley. Your rental car provides reliable transportation to various river access points and nearby attractions, ensuring you can easily explore multiple sites while maintaining comfort during your travels. Frequently asked questions in Lihue Airport

What kind of license do I need to rent a car on Turo?

Turo accepts valid licenses (not expired, suspended, or revoked) that allow for full driving privileges; this includes driver's licenses issued outside of the US. Licenses that Turo doesn't accept in the US include any that have expired, have been altered, are conditional, probational, provisional, or restricted. Learner's permit/instruction permits are not accepted.

Where can I find gas stations near Lihue Airport?

Several gas stations operate within a short drive of Lihue airport, including locations along Rice Street and Kaumualii Highway in town. You'll find additional fuel options near the Kukui Grove Shopping Center and along the main routes leading to popular destinations. Keep your rental car's tank filled when possible, as gas stations become less frequent in remote areas of Kauai, particularly on the north and west sides of the island.

Are there toll roads near Lihue Airport?

Kauai has no toll roads, making car rental an economical choice for exploring the entire island without additional fees. All major highways and scenic routes around Lihue and throughout Kauai remain free to use, allowing unlimited access to beaches, hiking trails, and attractions. Is there long term car rental on Turo?

Yes there is — whether you want to rent a car for three days, three months, or even longer, you can on Turo. You'll find discounted prices on bookings lasting 3+, 7+, or 30+ days, so you can get the best deals and lowest rates possible by booking longer trips.

What should I know before I start driving?

Hawaii follows right-hand traffic patterns, and speed limits are generally lower than mainland roads, with most highways capped at 55 mph. Kauai's roads can be narrow and winding, especially along coastal areas, so maintain safe following distances in your rental car. Always yield to pedestrians and cyclists, as the island has an active outdoor community, and be prepared for sudden weather changes that can affect visibility.

How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host's vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan. When booking a car in the US, you'll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that's right for you. On each trip, you're covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.* In New York state, you'll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you're covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

What documents and paperwork do I need to rent a car on Turo?

To rent a car on Turo, you must create a Turo account, have a valid driver's license, get approved to drive on Turo, and be 18 years old or older in the US, 21 years old or older in Australia, or 23 years old or older in Canada. When you're booking your first trip, you'll go through a quick approval process by entering your driver's license and some other information. In most cases, you'll get approved immediately, and you'll be set for all future road trips, day trips, and business trips!
