Top tips for renting a truck in Atlanta

Your itinerary and pick-up location are just one part of planning your journey. Read on for some tips on getting around Atlanta in your rental truck to make sure you maximize the value of the rental, no matter the purpose!

Tips for driving a truck in Atlanta

The first thing to keep in mind, especially if you're unfamiliar with larger vehicles, is that you need to be more aware of the size of your truck when exploring the streets of Atlanta. Make sure you spend some time getting used to how your truck drives before heading onto the busy highways and narrow city streets around Atlanta.

What is parking a truck like in Atlanta?

Although there are truck-friendly parking options in Atlanta, it's recommended to plan ahead as demand can be high for these spots, and your truck might not fit in a standard parking spot depending on the size. Many truck drivers opt for purpose-built parking garages around Atlanta to avoid tight squeezes on the city streets. If you're planning something more practical for your truck rental, like heading to a job site or moving furniture, it's best to pay attention to parking in urban areas, as many curbside spaces are designated for residents with parking permits.

How to choose the right type of truck for your Atlanta trip

Think about what you’ll be carrying and how you’ll be driving. For outdoor plans, weekend getaways, or hauling larger gear, a full-size pickup like the Jeep Gladiator or Ford F-150 offers added space and capability. If your plans involve lighter loads, small moves, or job-site errands, a midsize option such as the Ford Ranger can provide the utility you need with easier maneuverability around the city. Choosing the right size and configuration ensures your truck rental fits your plans without overcomplicating the drive.

Loading a truck

If you're planning on loading your rental truck with cargo or equipment, there are a few things to keep in mind, especially if you're unfamiliar with the vehicle. Be sure to check the truck's payload capacity to avoid overloading and impacting the safety of the vehicle. When loading the truck bed, it's important to distribute the weight evenly from front to back and side to side, to avoid an impact on handling and stability. If you're carrying large objects in the truck bed, securing them with straps or nets is essential to keep nearby vehicles and pedestrians safe. If you’re hauling heavier or rough materials, consider using protective padding or confirming that the truck is equipped with a bed liner to help prevent damage during your rental.

Gas stations and EV chargers in Atlanta

Regular gas stations and EV chargers are in abundance throughout Atlanta, so you'll never be far from a top-off. However, if you're renting a diesel truck, locations can be a bit more sparse. Options to fuel up on diesel are pretty limited in the downtown area, so you'll probably need to head further out to fill up. Keep this in mind when booking your truck and arranging a pickup location to avoid unnecessary trips to gas stations further away.

We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

What rental truck types are there in Atlanta?

No matter what you have planned, there is a truck rental available on the Turo marketplace to suit your project or adventure. Pickup trucks with large beds, like the Chevy Silverado or Ford F-150, are great if you need to transport furniture or carry equipment to a job site.

If you're planning on a long-term rental, an EV like the Tesla Cybertruck or Rivian R1T is great for keeping fuel costs low. Most modern trucks will include backup cameras and blind spot warnings, which will make parking on the busy streets of Atlanta less stressful.

If you’re looking to stand out, consider exploring Atlanta in a classic or vintage truck that adds character to every mile. Whether your goal is presence or practicality, there’s a truck that fits the moment.
