Frequently asked questions

What do I need to book a car on Turo?

To book a car on Turo, you must create a Turo account, be 18 years old or older in the US, 21 years old or older in the UK, 23 years old or older in Canada, have a valid driver’s license, and get approved to drive on Turo. When you’re booking your first trip, you’ll go through a quick approval process by entering your driver’s license and some other information. In most cases, you’ll get approved immediately, and you’ll be set for every future road trip, business trip, and family vacation!

Do I need my own insurance?

No, you don’t need personal insurance coverage to book a car on Turo.

In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan, except in limited situations for trips booked in Maryland. When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier, Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of coverage that’s right for you. With each plan, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company — $750,000 for the Premier plan.*

When booking a car in Canada, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier, Standard, or Minimum — and with each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance purchased from Economical Insurance Company in Alberta, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec, and Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) in British Columbia — up to $2,000,000 for all plans.**

When renting a car in the United Kingdom, you’ll also choose between the Premier, Standard, and Minimum protection plans. Each plan includes different limits of financial responsibility for physical damage. Protection plans are not insurance; they are an agreement between Turo and guests about financial responsibility if there is damage to the host’s vehicle during a trip.

Distinct from protection plans, all trips come with third-party auto liability insurance from ERS (Syndicate 218 at Lloyd’s) managed by IQUW Syndicate Management Limited, arranged via Turo’s broker Lockton Companies LLP. IQUW and Lockton are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

How do I get discounts when booking a car?

On your Account page, make sure you’ve checked the box to receive email notifications, and enable push notifications from the Turo app in your phone settings — we’ll send you occasional promotions, discounts, and deals!

Additionally, frequent travelers on Turo can get rewarded with the loyalty bonus — earn a promo code for one bonus day when you take trips totaling 10 days in a 90-day period!**

Are there discounts on weekly or monthly trips?

Yes, many Turo hosts offer discounted prices when you book trips lasting 3+, 7+, or 30+ days. Additionally, hosts can offer “early bird” discounts for Bakersfield trips booked a week or more in advance. So, get the best deals and lowest rates possible by booking longer trips, at least a week in advance.

How can I drive unlimited miles during my trip on Turo?

Some hosts offer unlimited distance for a trip; others set a daily distance limit. On the vehicle pages, you’ll see the total miles or kilometres you’re allowed to drive under the heading “Distance included.” You can find cars offering unlimited mileage with every trip by using the “Unlimited distance” filter.

What protection plan options are available on Turo?

When booking a car on Turo, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier, Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of coverage that’s right for you. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers — $750,000 for the Premier plan.*

What payment methods does Turo accept?

Turo accepts most credit cards issued by major financial institutions, including American Express and Discover cards, as well as debit cards with a Visa or Mastercard logo that are linked to a checking account.

Apple Pay and Google Pay on mobile devices are also accepted, but Turo does not accept cash or checks as valid payment methods.

What is the cancellation policy for guests on Turo?

You can cancel and get a full refund up to 24 hours before your trip starts. If you book a trip with less than 24 hours’ notice, you have one hour after booking to cancel free of charge. If you cancel after the free cancellation period ends, you will be charged a small cancellation fee.

What are the cleaning and safety policies on Turo?

Under the enhanced cleaning policy, hosts are required to clean and disinfect their vehicles thoroughly before every trip, so you can feel safe and comfortable behind the wheel. Turo hosts have access to training materials on enhanced cleaning practices, using the latest recommendations compiled from the CDC, EPA, WHO, and vehicle detailing experts, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Is Turo a rental car company?

No. Unlike rental car companies, Turo is a peer-to-peer car sharing marketplace where you can book directly from trusted local car owners in the US, Canada, and the UK. Turo does not own any vehicles — Turo hosts share their own personal cars and set their own prices, discounts, vehicle availability, and delivery options.

Is there a fee to add additional drivers to my trip?

There is no fee or additional charge for adding a driver to your trip on Turo. Only the guest who booked the trip (primary driver) can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add authorized drivers before your trip starts, though guests in the US and Canada can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress with no extra charges.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

Are there electric vehicles available near the airport?

Yes, there are electric vehicles available on Turo at locations near airports across the US, Canada, and the UK. To save time and hassle, skip the rental car counter and have your electric vehicle delivered to you. Set your hotel or the address of your vacation rental as your pickup location, and after arriving at your destination, take a taxi, Uber, Lyft, or shuttle service to the vehicle’s location.

What electric vehicle models can I book on Turo?

Browse a wide selection of electric vehicles for all kinds of occasions and budgets on Turo. Use the “Category” filter to search through all available electric vehicles in your area, like the Tesla Model X, Tesla Model 3, Porsche Taycan, Audi e-tron, BMW i4, Mercedes-Benz EQS, Rivian R1T, Jaguar I-Pace, Mustang Mach-E, Polestar 2, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and the Lucid Air. You can also use the “Deluxe class” or “Super Deluxe class” filters to browse premium or luxury convertible models. For the lowest prices, use the “budget-friendly” filter to browse economy options.

Are electric vehicles on Turo available with snow tires?

Yes, many hosts on Turo offer electric vehicles with snow or winter tires. Use the “Snow tires/chains” filter to find electric vehicles equipped with snow tires and safely navigate the roads during your winter vacation, staycation, or business trip.

How easy is it to charge an electric vehicle?

Major markets and cities in North America are continually improving charging station infrastructure, which makes it easy to charge an EV along main highways and in bigger cities. Most L2 chargers, often available in public parking areas, can charge to full in about eight hours, while DC fast chargers, located along highways, can charge to near full in half an hour. Charge cost varies by charging type and location, but can be between $2–15 per hour or $0.12–$1.10 per kW. For drivers who are concerned about range anxiety and charge time, Tesla Models 3, S, X, and Y all offer some of the longest ranges, and access to the network of Tesla Superchargers, which make charging more reliable and quicker than your average electric vehicle.

Are electric vehicles more sustainable?

Most official studies conclude that in the long term, driving an EV is more sustainable than a traditional gas-powered car because it has zero tailpipe emissions and releases fewer greenhouse gasses. Especially as many countries turn to cleaner energy sources to power their electric grids, EVs will become even more sustainable. Battery production is resource-intensive, but EVs require less maintenance and last longer than gas-powered vehicles, and as battery recycling processes improve, fewer new materials will be required to produce them.

Additionally, Turo offsets 100% of its estimated global carbon emissions by investing in greenhouse gas-reducing projects. To achieve carbon-neutral travel across the marketplace, Turo purchases carbon offsets by investing in high-quality, verified emission reduction projects through a partnership with leading carbon offset developer Bluesource. These projects help combat climate change and balance out our carbon footprint through responsible forestry and improving efficiency in commercial trucking.
