Pickup near or at Airports
From downtown Edmonton and the North Saskatchewan River Valley to day trips across Alberta, having a vehicle makes it easier to explore the region at your own pace. Before you hit the road, take a moment to familiarize yourself with local driving conditions, parking availability, fuel options, and other useful information for getting around the city.
Speed limits in Edmonton sit at 40 km/h on most residential streets and 50 km/h on collector roads, rising to 80 km/h on the Yellowhead Trail and 100 km/h on Anthony Henday Drive, the ring road that loops the city. Alberta law mandates seatbelts for every passenger and bans handheld phone use. Stop fully at red lights before turning right where permitted.
Traffic builds along Anthony Henday Drive, Whitemud Drive, and the Yellowhead between 7:00 and 9:00 am and reverses from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Construction on the ring road and the bridges across the North Saskatchewan can slow things considerably during summer. Compare routes on the Alberta 511 app, and reserve extra time during snow season for any longer city visit.
Edmonton winters are no joke. Snow falls from October through April, and overnight temperatures regularly dip below minus 20°C, with windchill pushing colder. Winter tires aren't legally required in Alberta but are strongly recommended for any rental in winter, with extra braking distance and reduced speed in icy conditions. Check the Alberta 511 site before any long drive.
Edmonton offers a mix of EPark on-street paid parking, public lots, and private parkades across the city centre. The City Hall Underground Parkade, the Centennial Plaza Parkade, and the Edmonton Tower Parkade are reliable options near Ice District events and the downtown core. Pay through the EPark app at most metered spaces.
Outside downtown, parking is generally easy. West Edmonton Mall and most suburban attractions offer free on-site parking with room for trucks, vans, and SUVs alike. Watch for seasonal parking bans during heavy snow clearing, when restrictions apply on residential streets.
There are no toll roads in Edmonton or anywhere in Alberta. Anthony Henday Drive, Yellowhead Trail, and every highway through the province are free to drive, so there are no additional road charges to factor into your trip.
Gas stations are plentiful across Edmonton, with Petro-Canada, Shell, Esso, and Costco Fuel locations along Yellowhead Trail, Whitemud Drive, and the Anthony Henday corridor. Prices tend to track the Alberta average, and topping up before a longer road trip out of the city is recommended.
For EV drivers, Edmonton has a strong charging network. Tesla Superchargers operate at Premium Outlet Collection near Edmonton International Airport and West Edmonton Mall, while FLO and ChargePoint stations are available at public parkades, shopping centres, and other locations across the city. The network also extends along Highway 2 toward Calgary and west toward Jasper, making longer journeys straightforward with a little planning.
Not necessarily, but having a car makes it much easier to explore Edmonton and the wider province. While Edmonton Transit serves the city and the LRT connects many key areas, destinations such as Elk Island National Park, Jasper National Park, Banff, and the Drumheller Badlands are most conveniently reached by road. A car gives you the flexibility to explore Alberta on your own schedule.

We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.
To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

If you book a trip with less than 24 hours’ notice, you have one hour after booking to cancel free of charge. If you cancel after the free cancellation period ends, you will be charged a cancellation fee.
In the rare event a host cancels, you’ll be notified immediately so you can book another car, or we’ll help you find one. Your refund can be temporarily held to expedite rebooking, or the funds can be returned to your bank account — your choice.
The cost of car rental in Edmonton can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rental in Edmonton, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.
