What are the road rules and driving conditions in Jacksonville?

While it can take some time to become familiar with the highway system in and around Jacksonville, driving in town is simple. While some of the residential roads and side streets are narrow, you can navigate most of Jacksonville on larger roads like Johnson Blvd. and Highway 17. Keep in mind that the junction of Highway 17 and Wilmington Highway can get congested during rush hour.

The speed limits on the smaller Jacksonville roads range from 35-45 miles per hour (MPH). On the highways around the city, you can expect the speed limit to extend from 45-60 MPH. In 2021, the speed limit on the Jacksonville Bypass increased to 60 MPH from 55 MPH. The Jacksonville Parkway also saw an increase to 50 MPH from 45 MPH.

The weather is often sunny and pleasant in Jacksonville, which should make for a comfortable drive in or around town. While it doesn't snow much, the Jacksonville area gets more than six inches of rain per month from July to September, so be careful when driving your rental car. Consider a vehicle with AWD or 4WD, such as a GMC Yukon or Jeep Cherokee.

What is parking like in Jacksonville?

When you're driving to Jacksonville, parking spaces are easy to find. In the downtown district, you'll have access to ample street parking options, which are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. When you're traveling across North Carolina, you might encounter a toll road. The two primary toll roads are the Monroe Expressway in the Charlotte area and the Triangle Expressway in the Raleigh area, both of which you can quickly pass through with an NC Quick Pass transponder. The tolling that occurs along Interstate 95 is a 90-minute drive from Jacksonville. If you intend to stay in the Jacksonville area for your entire trip, you won't pay any tolls.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Jacksonville?

Jacksonville offers many EV chargers and gas stations for drivers of all types of vehicles. If you need to fill up your tank before heading down to one of the many Jacksonville beaches, you'll find numerous Speedway, Circle K, and Shell gas stations in the area.
