Calgary International Airport (YYC) is approximately 17 kilometres north of downtown Calgary. The drive typically takes anywhere from 15–25 minutes, depending on traffic, making it a convenient route to the city centre.
Calgary's roads are well-maintained, but driving in the region does require some awareness, especially during the winter months. Drivers are expected to adhere to speed limits, which range from 40 km/h in neighbourhood areas to 100-110 km/h on highways.
As a major city in Alberta, expect heavy traffic on major roads (like Stoney Trial, Deerfoot Trail and Glenmore Trail) during commuter peak hours, which typically run from 7 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 6 pm on weekdays.
Winter driving conditions can be challenging, so having a rental vehicle equipped with winter tires is highly recommended during colder months. Plus, Alberta enforces strict distracted driving laws — avoid using mobile phones or engaging in other activities that take your attention off the road.

For example, the Calgary Tower has a dedicated parking garage, and other facilities like Calgary Place and TELUS Sky provide ample parking spaces for visitors. Be sure to check the signs for any time restrictions or fees before parking and heading off into Downtown Calgary.
Good news: there are no toll roads in Calgary and the rest of Alberta. The city's road system primarily relies on regular highways and major roads, including the Trans Canada Highway, which connects various parts of the city efficiently.
Calgary offers numerous gas stations and EV charging stations. Gas stations are widespread across the city along roads like the Trans-Canada Highway or 14 Street Southwest.
For electric vehicles, Calgary International Airport and locations like the Calgary Zoo and nearby shopping centres have convenient EV charging options. You can also check out locations near 1st Street Southeast for more EV charging options.
