Banff town is small but well worth visiting. Its main street, Banff Avenue, is packed with charming stores, great restaurants, and awesome museums. It's a great base for exploring the park and surrounding area, so why not choose a renting location in the town to pick up your car?
Want a stress-free vacation in Banff? Check out these essential tips. Plan your trip before you set off, and you'll spend the entire rental period free from hassle and worries.
Speed limits in Banff are typically 90 km/h on major routes and 60 km/h on secondary roads. Driving conditions vary significantly by season. In winter, Banff and the surrounding area receive heavy snowfall, and snow tires are required on many roads from November 1 to April 1. Slow down if you see wildlife near the road, but avoid stopping to take photos, as this can create traffic hazards.
There’s free parking at Banff Train Station, a 10-minute walk from the downtown area. In peak season, all spaces tend to be full by mid-morning, so set your alarm clock nice and early. If you’re driving a rental car, downtown Banff has several paid parking options, with fees in effect from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
There are no traditional tolls in Banff, but if you want to drive your car rental into the national park, you'll need a Parks Canada pass. To save time and hassle, buy one online before you go. Choose a single-location pass for exploring just Banff, or go for an annual pass that will let you visit other national parks, too.
You'll find plenty of gas stations in and around Banff town. There are both Level 2 and Level 3 options for fast or slow EV charging. If you're planning a long drive into the national park, fill your tank before you go. There's only one gas station on the Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper, and it's on the pricey side.
Realistically, you won't have much of a vacation in Banff unless you've got your own set of wheels. Many of the best places in the national park can only be reached by car. Without a car rental on Turo, you'll be limited to the areas that you can see on the park's shuttle buses, and you won't have the freedom to explore the Rockies at your own pace.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. If you cancel after the free cancellation period ends, you will be charged a cancellation fee.
In the rare event a host cancels, you’ll be notified immediately so you can book another car, or we’ll help you find one. Your refund can be temporarily held to expedite rebooking, or the funds can be returned to your bank account — your choice.
