Top tips for renting a car in Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay is an easy place to explore by car, with attractions spread along the coastline and throughout the wider Fraser Coast region. While traffic is typically light, parking and road activity can increase during school holidays and whale-watching season. Here are a few things to know before you get behind the wheel.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Hervey Bay?

For a safe, easy drive around Hervey Bay, follow typical Queensland road rules: drive on the left-hand side of the road, observe road signs, adhere to local speed limits, and wear a seatbelt at all times. Across Australia, it's illegal to use a hand-held phone while driving, and breaking this law carries harsh financial and legal penalties. When you encounter a roundabout, always give way to the right and to vehicles already on the roundabout.

Hervey Bay's speed limits are aligned with the rest of the state, with limits starting at 40 to 50 kilometres per hour (km/h) in school zones, residential areas, and the CBD, followed by 60 to 80 km/h on multi-lane roads, and 80 to 100 km/h on freeways and rural roads.

The weather is mild practically year-round in Hervey Bay, however, Queensland is no stranger to tropical thunderstorms. When driving in heavy rain, use your headlights and windscreen wipers, and pull over if necessary. Flooding can occasionally affect roads across the Fraser Coast following periods of heavy rain. If flood warnings are in place, check local conditions before travelling and never attempt to drive through floodwaters.

Lastly, traffic in Hervey Bay is usually quite manageable, but during peak whale watching season (mid-July to November), weekends and public holidays may be busier than usual. Expect light build-ups along major roads like Boat Harbour Drive, Maryborough Hervey Bay Road (Saltwater Creek Road), and Main Street.

What is parking like in Hervey Bay?

Parking in Hervey Bay is as relaxed as the area itself. In the CBD and across the suburbs, you'll find ample street parking, with spaces in higher-demand areas (e.g., near the Esplanade) featuring time restrictions. It's also easy to find parking in shopping centres like Stockland Hervey Bay and Eli Waters Shopping Centre. Secure parking is available at the K'gari Ferry Terminal in River Heads, and at the Hervey Bay Airport for short- and long-term stays.

Are there toll roads in Hervey Bay?

No, there are no toll roads in Hervey Bay or throughout the Fraser Coast, which means you can drive around the area without accruing additional costs. However, if you're driving from Brisbane, there are a handful of toll roads that you may pass through as you head north, such as the Gateway Motorway and the Clem7 tunnel.

Are there petrol stations and EV chargers in Hervey Bay?

Yes. Petrol stations are widely available throughout Hervey Bay, including around the city centre and major commercial areas. EV chargers can also be found at selected shopping centres and public facilities across the region, making it convenient to keep an electric vehicle charged during your stay. For longer regional journeys, it's a good idea to plan charging stops in advance.

Do I need to rent a car in Hervey Bay?

Hervey Bay does have public transport — namely, buses operated by Wide Bay Transit and Translink — however, it's limited in both route and operating hours. Cars rule the roads here, so a car hire in Hervey Bay presents the best way to see this glittering coastal gem at your own pace. With a Hervey Bay car hire, you'll have the freedom to explore local landmarks and hidden hotspots alike, including World Heritage-listed sites along the Great Beach Drive from the Sunshine Coast — only accessible with your own rental car.
