Top tips for renting a car in Shreveport

Driving around Shreveport (and its neighboring Bossier City) can be a breeze if you know what to expect. Keep these top tips and pointers in mind for a smooth journey, regardless of if you're planning to rent a car for an impromptu road trip or searching for car rental deals for a longer stay.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Shreveport?

Driving in Shreveport is a mix of laid-back cruising and bustling city traffic, depending on where you're headed. The city is well-connected by I-20 and I-49, so it's easy to zip between neighborhoods, downtown, and even across to Bossier City.

Speed limits typically range from 25–70 miles per hour (mph). However, you should keep an eye out near school zones like those around the C.E. Byrd High School and South Highlands Elementary, where limits drop significantly during peak hours.

What is parking like in Shreveport?

You'll find that parking in Shreveport is surprisingly easy, especially if you're in the downtown area. Expect metered spots and public lots near hotspots like Festival Plaza and the Shreveport Convention Center, though prices will vary. If you're heading to a big event, it pays to arrive early — lots fill up fast during festivals, concerts, and Mardi Gras parades.

Most downtown meters don't run past 5 pm and are free on the weekends, so if you're planning a night out on Texas Street, you might score free parking after a certain hour. Just be sure to check posted signs — no one likes an unexpected ticket!

Are there toll roads in Shreveport?

Good news: Louisiana keeps it simple without any toll roads in Shreveport or Bossier City! However, there is a new option in the works for those driving between Shreveport and South Bossier called The Red River Express.

Don't worry, you'll still be able to drive freely without transponders or unexpected fees as this toll road is only one of four options that allow you to cross from Shreveport into Bossier City. However, if you plan on road-tripping toward Texas or beyond, you will want to double-check your route to see if there are any toll roads you'll cross.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Shreveport?

You won't have to search long for gas as there are plenty of gas stations like Shell, Exxon, and Circle K available along places like North Market Street, Youree Drive, the I-20, and Mansfield Road. If you're renting an EV, charging stations are popping up more frequently, with notable spots at 1133 St Vincent Avenue or Caesars Horseshoe on 711 Horseshoe Blvd if you're looking for an option in Bossier City.

Do I need to rent a car in Shreveport?

Having your own rental car makes exploring Shreveport so much easier since public transit is limited. Nothing beats the freedom of hopping in your car for a sunset drive along Clyde Fant Parkway or a spontaneous fishing trip to Cross Lake.

Whether you're bar-hopping downtown, heading to Bossier City casinos, or venturing into Louisiana's backroads, a rental car on Turo lets you travel on your own schedule.

Frequently asked questions about Shreveport car rentals

What kind of license do I need to rent a car on Turo?

Turo accepts valid licenses (not expired, suspended, or revoked) that allow for full driving privileges; this includes driver’s licenses issued outside of the US. Licenses that Turo doesn’t accept in the US include any that have expired, have been altered, are conditional, probational, provisional, or restricted. Learner’s permit/instruction permits are not accepted.

How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

No, you don’t need personal insurance coverage to rent a car on Turo.

In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan. When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
