Renting a car in New Orleans means you’re the boss of your own Big Easy adventure. From cruising through historic streets to venturing out to swampy state parks, a rental car lets you soak up the city on your terms. Whether you’re on a jazzed-up weekend getaway, an all-out Louisiana road trip, or simply enjoying the feel of a different car as a local, here’s the lowdown on navigating New Orleans by car.
In New Orleans, just like the rest of the U.S., you’re driving on the right side of the road. Speed limits in the city are on the chill side, usually 25–35 mph, because, hey, you’ll want to take it slow to catch all the vibrant city scenes. Keep an eye out for pedestrians around busy areas like the French Quarter; they’ll often stroll out without a care as if they’re the main event (and in NOLA, they might just be).
When it comes to parking, New Orleans keeps it interesting. You’ll find garages downtown in places like 522-574 S Rampart St, or in the French Quarter in lots like 520 Chartres St, but street parking? Let’s just say it’s a treasure hunt, and X marks the spot wherever there’s an empty space!
Metered parking is your friend, and if you’re exploring quieter neighborhoods, residential parking spots are golden. Just remember, towing trucks don’t play around here — if a sign says “no parking,” it means it!
New Orleans is toll-free, but if you’re feeling the urge to venture beyond city limits, a few toll roads might appear. Headed north to Lake Pontchartrain? Be ready for the Causeway Bridge toll — the view is worth every penny.
Gas stations are sprinkled throughout New Orleans, particularly along S Claiborne Avenue and the Pontchartrain Expressway, so filling up is a breeze. For electric cars, there’s a growing network of EV chargers along Canal Street and all around the Central Business District, but if you’re taking a day trip, check for chargers along your route. No one wants a low battery in the bayou.
If you’re planning on sticking close to Bourbon Street or taking a selfie marathon in the French Quarter, you might get away without a car. But if you want to taste more than beignets and see more than the usual sights, New Orleans car rental opens up a whole world of exploration. Plus, there’s nothing like a DIY road trip playlist for crossing off every Louisiana bucket list item.
