I am extremely disappointed with this rental experience and how the situation was handled.
Within the first two days of receiving the vehicle, the warning light came on and then went away. At first, I assumed it may have been a false alarm. However, the issue became more serious the first time I had to refuel the vehicle. After filling the tank, the car would not start. I had to pump the gas pedal repeatedly before it would finally turn over.
Shortly after that, the owner contacted me and stated that he had received some type of notification regarding the vehicle. I explained that the car would not start for a while after fueling. Instead of treating this as a serious mechanical concern, he provided me with a “workaround,” instructing me to only use certain gas brands, not to fill the tank past a certain point, and to follow another specific step when fueling.
The next time I had to put gas in the vehicle, the same issue occurred again — and it continued to happen every time I refueled. I reported this to the owner, but instead of taking responsibility or acknowledging the issue, he acted as though I had caused the problem. This led to a heated back-and-forth exchange. Unfortunately, I did not have time to exchange vehicles, so I was left dealing with the same issue for the remainder of the rental.
The warning light continued to come on and off after these incidents, and the vehicle consistently required me to pump the gas pedal after fueling in order to start. I am not a car expert, but based on the owner’s immediate knowledge of specific fueling instructions and the repeated nature of the problem, it strongly appears that this was a pre-existing issue that the owner was already aware of.
I am also very disappointed in how Turo handled the exchange process and this overall situation. This experience was frustrating, inconvenient, and concerning from a safety and reliability standpoint. Moving forward, I will be returning to traditional rental car companies instead of using Turo.
Inaccurate review. Telemetry logs prove the vehicle was clear at pickup on April 27 and no light occurred until May 2 which was 6 days into the trip. Guest failed to report it immediately.
In chat logs guest explicitly admitted to pumping fuel past the automatic click to round off the total. Overfilling forces liquid fuel into the EVAP canister choking the engine. This is improper fueling not a defect.
We offered a brand new 2024 Tiguan upgrade which she rejected. Full logs sent to Turo.
