I rented a VW Taos on Turo recently, and overall it was… okay, but definitely more frustrating than expected.
At first glance, the car looked fine—fairly clean and newer—but once I actually started using it, the issues started to pile up. The key fob trunk button didn’t work at all, which became a daily annoyance when loading and unloading. Not a dealbreaker on its own, but it set the tone.
Driving it was where things really started to feel off. The cabin noise was surprisingly loud, especially on the highway—it felt like every bit of road and wind noise was coming straight through. On top of that, the brakes clearly need changing. They felt worn and not as responsive as they should be, which isn’t something you want to question while driving.
The tires also looked like they’ve seen better days. I’m not saying they needed to be swapped immediately, but they definitely weren’t in great shape and could use new tread soon. It just didn’t give that sense of confidence you expect from a rental.
To be fair, the car did get me where I needed to go without any major breakdowns. But between the maintenance concerns, the loud ride, and the small inconveniences adding up, it didn’t feel like a well-maintained or reliable rental.
Not the worst experience—but definitely not one I’d repeat.
