tldr: the car in fact does still smell like weed and the tags are VERY expired.
If you’re reading the other poor reviews of this rental car and thinking, “surely the car has been cleaned in between uses and doesn’t still smell like weed.” or, “surely after the complaint of expired tags, the registration has been renewed and the tags updated.” think again.
i fully accept that i saw those reviews and didn’t take them seriously, but it’s very real.
when you open the car door, the first thing you notice is the VERY strong air freshener scent working overtime to mask the weed scent. honestly, it probably wouldn’t have been a dealbreaker, but i had a roadtrip planned with my mother, and the amount of time we were planning to spend in the car would have been intolerable with the smell.
while i was checking the rest of the car, i noticed that the tags expired in MAY OF 2025! when i reached out to the owner, he told me “the registration is in fact updated but that they don’t send physical tags anymore(?!) and it doesn’t even matter because police don’t check your tags, they only check your registration!” woof, no thanks bro. not trying to get pulled over for expired tags in this hotbox.
turo was very good about immediately processing a full refund, but honestly, how is this person still allowed to rent on this platform?

Thank you for your feedback. This vehicle's registration is current and valid through May 2027. Before the trip, I sent the guest the Ohio BMV registration card and the state's online vehicle record confirming this. The guest chose to cancel, and Turo issued a full refund. Our vehicles are thoroughly cleaned and deodorized between every rental, and smoking is strictly prohibited. Future guests are welcome to message us with any questions before booking.

WARNING !!! Do Not Rent… Car Smelled like marijuana, floors not vacuumed at all, gas tank way under half when picked up

Sorry to hear this, but it doesn't match the car's condition at pickup. The Santa Fe was cleaned and vacuumed before your trip, and smoking is never allowed in our vehicles. On fuel, the policy is simple: return it at the level you received it, so it cost you nothing extra. If anything had been raised during the trip, we'd have addressed it right away. We stand behind our cars and our record with other guests.
Car was dirty on the inside, smelled of marijuana and the tank wasn’t full. Won’t be renting from this individual again.

Thanks for the feedback, Ashley. Smoking is never allowed in our vehicles, and the car is cleaned before every trip. After hearing about the odor, we're treating the cabin to fully remove it. On fuel, guests only need to return the car at the level they received it, so there was no extra cost. We'd have been glad to fix any issue right away if it had been flagged during the trip.
