We almost gave a 5 star rating. The vehicle is beautiful, except things did not go as planned and we felt bullied by the owner and his staff.
This is an immaculate $80,000 Sequoia except it was sporting four very low-tread tires. The bulk of our driving was on paved roads to and from and inside Death Valley National Park. On our final day in the park we experienced a flat tire. No biggie, right? I thought so until the three essential items were missing from the vehicle that would allow me to change the tire:
* Jack
* Wheel lock key
* Tool to lower the spare
Without those three items, no one could even help us. We were without cell service in the park, had to ask another family to contact emergency services for us. California Highway Patrol arrived 75 minutes later. We used his WiFi hot spot to communicate with the owner or staff that we would be forced to tow the vehicle 60 miles to Pahrump on a flat bed truck. CHP helped arrange that tow. They had to drive from Pahrump, hook up the vehicle, and take us to Pahrump. This took several hours. A National Park ranger stopped by in the meanwhile. No one could help us without the wheel lock key and the tool to lower the spare at least.
My family of 5, including 3 children, did not eat for over 7 hours (stranded 11:30am, ate in Pahrump about 6:45pm).
The vehicle owner demanded I replace the tire, but none of the 3 shops in Pahrump had the same tire. And according to the shops, all 4 needed replacement. This was not a sales tactic. This was the truth.
And actually the last shop owner offered to repair and test the tire for free, probably because our youngest child was screaming for food and never got a nap. I texted the owner that the repair was being done, but 45 minutes went by before the owner demanded I replace the tire, saying it’s not safe to rent the vehicle out on a repaired tire. When I asked why he didn’t respond for 45 minutes (knowing we were in this predicament), one of his responses at 8:14pm was “We should end your trip now. How does that sound ?”
With all of this happening, the owner still begged for our 5 star rating. My rating goes way beyond the vehicle. It includes customer service and respect. And my family suffered plenty due to this owner’s negligence. It’s not about the flat tire. It’s about making sure the necessary items are available in the vehicle for an emergency such as ours. And when you make a mistake, own it and show genuine sympathy and respect to your customer’s family.
I’ve given the owner and Turo 10 days to make things right. After five calls and three online chat sessions with Turo, they keep telling me they are waiting for confirmation from the owner. I have text threads, time stamps, reports or receipts from CHP, National Park Service, the tow service, and the tire shop to provide your confirmation.
Now this story may go viral to protect others from the same unfortunate situation.
