This was easily the worst rental experience I’ve had on Turo.
The vehicle was delivered with expired registration, a partially filled gas tank, and unexpected parking charges just to leave with the car. Those issues alone would have warranted a poor review.
The bigger problem was the handling of the return. Our rental began at 2:00 PM and should have ended at 2:00 PM. Instead, because the booking was made in a different time zone than where we were vacationing, our return time was effectively moved three hours earlier. To make matters worse, the car had already been booked for another renter at 1:00 PM—before our 24-hour rental period should have ended.
I spent several hours of the final day of our vacation messaging the host and speaking with Turo support trying to resolve an issue that should never have existed. We were told the return time had been adjusted and that no action was required in the app. That was incorrect. We were then told the issue had been escalated and that someone would call us back within 24–48 hours, despite the disputed return time being less than 12 hours away.
In the end, we returned the vehicle at 10:30 AM, well before the next renter’s 1:00 PM pickup, but not before losing several hours of our vacation dealing with customer service, conflicting information, and a problem entirely of Turo’s making.
If Turo wants to compete with traditional rental car companies, the basics matter: legally registered vehicles, full fuel tanks, accurate reservation times, and customer support empowered to solve time-sensitive issues before a customer’s vacation ends. This experience failed on all four counts.
