⚠️ DO NOT RENT THIS VEHICLE — SERIOUS CONCERNS ABOUT CONDITION AND MAINTENANCE

This was one of the worst rental experiences I've had, and I strongly recommend that potential renters look elsewhere.

The vehicle was handed over to us in a condition that was completely inconsistent with what I expected. We picked the car up from the airport at night in essentially pitch-black conditions, so we could not reasonably inspect the vehicle. It wasn't until we were able to see and drive it properly in daylight that the condition became apparent.

The exterior was extremely dirty and heavily covered in water spotting, including what appeared to be long-standing etching into the clear coat. The wheels were caked in brake dust, and the windows were dirty both inside and out. This wasn't simply a car that had accumulated a little dirt during a previous trip — the overall condition suggested a serious lack of care and preparation before being given to a paying customer.

More concerning were the maintenance warnings displayed by the vehicle.

The car indicated that a service was approximately 300 days overdue and was also displaying a low-oil warning. All four tires were showing different tire pressures, and the vehicle repeatedly displayed a tire-pressure warning.

When I brought these concerns to the host, I was initially questioned about why I hadn't noticed the condition at pickup. I explained that the vehicle was picked up at night and that the condition simply could not be properly evaluated in the dark.

The host subsequently acknowledged the issues with the dirty brakes, water marks and dirty windows and apologized for the experience. Regarding the service warning, the host stated that the oil had supposedly been changed but that the maintenance notification had not been reset. I have no way of independently verifying that.

My biggest concern isn't cosmetic. A rental vehicle should be properly cleaned, inspected and maintained before being handed to a customer. A vehicle displaying maintenance and tire-pressure warnings should not be passed to a renter without those issues being addressed or clearly explained beforehand.

I am posting this because I would have wanted someone else to warn me before renting this vehicle.

If you're considering renting this car, inspect EVERYTHING in broad daylight before accepting it. Check the maintenance warnings, oil level, tire pressures, windows, wheels and exterior paint. Do not assume the vehicle has been properly prepared simply because it looks acceptable in the listing photos.

For me, the combination of the vehicle's condition, maintenance warnings and lack of preparation made this an unacceptable rental experience.

Hawaii Rent A Car's response

We take vehicle safety seriously. The guest initially described the vehicle as “amazing” and raised these concerns 4 days later, near the end of the trip. When we asked for photos to better understand the concerns, none were provided. The guest then requested a $175 refund and stated they would leave negative reviews on Turo, Google and Yelp if we did not provide it. We declined the demand. We stand behind maintaining our vehicles and always welcome legitimate concerns.

Very nice host. Very good car
