MARK •

the host was good. but Turo support was unhelpful to the point where i was charged 155 for an extra day for a 2020 ford with 123,000 miles on it. it took 3 hours on the phone of wasted time to attempt to add an extra day to my trip.

Horrible experience with this host and the 2020 Explorer. On the way from MIA to Key Largo in light to moderate rain the vehicle hydroplaned to the left sharply and, while I was able to regain control, we almost hit the concrete median wall at 55 mph. I moved all the way to the right lane and stayed under 35 mph. The vehicle was struggling to maintain traction even at the lower speed and started hydroplaning several more times. We got off and went to the closest gas station. I got out and looked at the tires and they were BALD in the back and nearly bald in the front. Spent the next 2 hours on the phone with the host and Turo getting basically nowhere. The host had the audacity to ask me to drive the vehicle back to their shop in Hialeah and he would give me a Tahoe to use for the same price. I repeatedly advised the host that the vehicle was unsafe to drive anywhere and that I was not willing to leave the gas station and I sent him pictures of the tires through the app. At one point, he said he would bring the Tahoe to me, but it would be somewhere around 2 to 3 hours for us to wait. I agreed to nothing and I refused to cancel the trip inside the app because I had selected it as non refundable, and they knew that. I explained to the Turo agent that I would be expecting a full refund and that these people were going to have to come get their vehicle and that we had ordered an Uber to take us the rest of the way which ended up costing us another $120. I was just not willing to risk my life, my wife’s life, and the life of my teenage daughter, and her two friends that we brought along with us from Iowa. The host told me to leave the keys under the mat in the vehicle and so we did, got it in our Uber and left. I called the gas station a couple hours later to verify if the host had come in picked up their vehicle and they told me that they had. I then messaged the host on the app and said that I was aware that they picked up their vehicle and I would be expecting a full refund. All he said was the vehicle was “on the way back to their shop”. The next day I called Turo to make sure that they were aware that the host picked their vehicle up and that I expected the full refund. They agreed and advised me that it would take about 10 business days to get my money back. I also asked them to make sure that nobody could rent this vehicle again until the host put four new tires on the vehicle. I must say, I was absolutely shocked to find the condition of those tires once I got out and looked at them up close. We literally could’ve died. For me, a reasonable expectation for these people would be to provide a safe and well maintained vehicle. But I guess that wasn’t important to this host. This was my first time using Turo and I highly doubt I will go this route again. I’d rather stick with one of the major rental car companies.
