The host was extremely helpful and accomodating, even helping me to navigate a flat tire, saving me over $340+ to plug it instead of replacing it.

FSD was not the up-to-date version so it’s kind of pointless to even have it with this rental. The battery life because it’s such an old model is terrible. The mile range is not good at all. You have to charge up almost every 30 minutes.

Texla Motorcars's response

Melvin, thank you for your honest feedback. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that your feedback is based on some inaccurate information and unrealistic expectations.
This is a 10 year old vehicle. It has the MOST up to date FSD software that is available for this vehicle. It receives updates all the time from Tesla. Imagine using a 10 year old laptop!
It has 238 miles of range at 100% charge when new. It now has btween 200 and 210 miles of range because the battery is 10 years old.

Great service,

Great communication,

Really appreciate using the Tesla.

Booked this Model X for a Dallas–San Antonio roadtrip with two young kids, specifically for the extra space with the third row.

At 9:30 PM the night before a 1:30 PM pickup, the host offered to move us to a Model Y from his fleet because the X was still at the shop getting the A/C serviced. That proposed swap meant less room for a family road trip where the third row provides some much appreciated elbow room for the kids. At that hour there's no practical way to cancel and rebook with another host for the next day, so we took the X.

The AC was audibly struggling at pickup — a wheezing noise from the compressor. The host knew: he'd already had it looked at and been told his third-party warranty wouldn't cover a replacement until the part actually failed. So he off-loaded the risk to us.

It failed about eight hours later, around 9 PM, roughly forty minutes outside San Antonio. Outside temp was 95°F at that time in the evening in the last week of July and 100°F+ during the day . We finished the drive with the windows down with the children hot, sweating and miserable. On a Model X the same compressor cools the cabin and the battery, so continuing in that heat wasn't just uncomfortable — it risked the pack. Plus, that heat is dangerously unsafe to humans for an extended drive with no A/C. We stopped driving it and took it in.

Friday morning went to the Tesla service center instead of our plans for a leisurely early morning tour of the Riverwalk . No loaner available to us, since I'm not the registered owner. We had the choice between using a rideshare service or getting a rental. We decided that for convenience and to cap the amount of the total outlay that we would rent a car for two days. The X was released Saturday afternoon.

We could have left the car in San Antonio and rented one-way for the rest of the trip — simpler for us, and the host would have had to retrieve it himself. Instead we handled the drop-off and pickup at Tesla and drove his car back to Dallas. In five days there was never an apology or a thank-you. He committed in writing to covering our replacement rental, then went quiet for four days after we returned the car and provided the receipt for the car rental. The cost of reimbursing the rental represented a savings of at least 10x in costs of what he would have needed to spend to travel to San Antonio himself, deal with getting the car fixed and driving it back. Not to mention 3-4 days of his life. Not compensating us after he made a written commitment was a poor decision on his part that significantly undervalued our assistance in fixing HIS car and it was needlessly customer antagonistic. We were eventually reimbursed (by Turo).

The vehicle itself is nice, it drove well, and the compressor was replaced under warranty. But it was rented to us in a condition the host knew was failing, and that cost us significant parts of two days of a five-day trip. Realistically, any car can fail at any point for whatever reason. So we're not casting aspersions at the vehicle; it happens. Anyone can manage a smooth transaction when everything works, but the true test of a business is how it responds when things go wrong. And it is on that note that our experience went awry when he prioritized the vehicle repairs over his guest's safety and inconvenience.

Ratings: 2 overall, 1 on maintenance, and 5 for cleanliness.
