Terrible Experience – Unsafe Vehicle and Unacceptable Customer Service

Our rental experience was extremely disappointing and ultimately ruined the end of our vacation. The vehicle left us stranded on the side of the road. The car would turn on, but the emergency brake would not release, making it impossible to move the vehicle. This was clearly a mechanical failure and should never have happened if the car had been properly maintained.

To make matters worse, it took 5.5 hours for Turo to pick up the vehicle. That was an entire vacation day wasted sitting and waiting for a tow truck. We also spent approximately 2.5 hours on the phone with customer service trying to get assistance.

Our interaction with Mohammad from roadside assistance was especially frustrating. We clearly explained that we had two children with us and were stranded. When he told us the tow truck would take 60–90 minutes, we asked if that meant we would be left on the side of the road with two children for that entire time. His response was simply “Yes.” There was no empathy, urgency, or concern for our safety.

After being transferred to support, the next agent was somewhat helpful, but only after we had to explain what should have been obvious—that we should not be charged additional fees for another vehicle when the original one failed due to poor mechanical condition. Our vacation time had already been cut short because of this situation, and we were not going to spend more money to fix a problem that was not our fault. The agent eventually provided a one-time courtesy waiver, but that does not make up for the stress, inconvenience, and lost time.

Overall, this was a terrible way to end our vacation. Turo needs to do a much better job ensuring that vehicles listed on their platform meet proper mechanical and safety standards. Customer service and roadside assistance staff also need significantly better training in handling emergency situations—especially when families with children are involved.

I would not recommend this experience to anyone.

I’m sorry the trip ended this way. When the issue was reported, we took it seriously and worked to assist through the proper Turo support and roadside channels. After recovery, the vehicle was found to be in running condition. While I understand the frustration caused by the roadside delay, that part of the experience was handled through Turo support. I’ve consistently maintained strong service and five-star hosting standards, and guest safety remains a priority.
