Alaska requires headlights on at all times while driving, and winter driving conditions in Fairbanks can be challenging with ice and snow from October through April. Your rental car should have emergency supplies including blankets, food, and a flashlight when venturing outside the Fairbanks area. Always inform someone of your travel plans when exploring remote areas, as cell phone coverage can be limited in Alaska's wilderness regions.
From Fairbanks airport, take Airport Way southwest for several miles until it connects with the Richardson Highway. Follow the Richardson Highway south, then turn west onto Airport Way which becomes Cushman Street as you approach downtown Fairbanks. The route is straightforward with clear signage directing you into the city center where you'll find hotels, restaurants, and local attractions.

On the vehicle pages, you'll see the total miles or kilometers you're allowed to drive under the heading "Distance included." You can find cars offering unlimited mileage with every trip by using the "Unlimited distance" filter.
Alaska does not have toll roads, so you won't encounter any fees while driving around Fairbanks or throughout the state. All major highways and roads in the Fairbanks area are free to use, making your car rental experience more budget-friendly for exploring Alaska. This includes popular routes like the Parks Highway to Denali and the Dalton Highway heading north toward the Arctic Circle.
A minivan rental from Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) provides excellent cargo space for Alaska adventure gear like camping equipment, fishing supplies, and winter clothing. These vehicles offer comfortable seating for larger groups exploring the vast wilderness around Fairbanks, from Denali National Park to the Arctic Circle. Rental minivans handle Alaska's diverse road conditions well while keeping passengers warm during long drives through the state's expansive terrain.
Several gas stations operate along Airport Way between FAI and downtown Fairbanks, providing convenient fuel stops for your rental car. The Fairbanks area has limited but growing electric vehicle charging infrastructure, with stations located primarily in the downtown core and at some hotels. Plan your routes carefully if driving an electric vehicle, as charging options become scarce outside the immediate Fairbanks vicinity.
