Hengistbury Head is a headland of wild beauty where ancient landscapes meet sweeping sea views. Hike up the gravel cliffs for panoramic lookouts, spot rare birds or walk along the beach huts of Mudeford Spit. Located a short drive from the centre, it’s an easy and rewarding stop with ample parking and direct transportation access.
This iconic stretch of the Jurassic Coast is a geological masterpiece. Durdle Door’s dramatic limestone arch and the chalky curves of Lulworth Cove reveal layers of the earth’s history in every cliff face. You’ll want your own wheels for this one — public transport is limited, and carparks near the trailheads allow for all-day stays, with pay and display available.
Known for its calm waters, soft sand and million-pound views, Sandbanks Beach is a local favourite for summer swimming, paddleboarding and sunset strolls. During holiday periods, it can fill quickly, so hiring a car makes all the difference — giving you the flexibility to arrive early or pop down later in the day without relying on crowded public options.

Pickup near or at Airports
Navigating Bournemouth by car offers a smooth and flexible experience, but a few handy tips can make it even easier. From traffic patterns to fuel stops and parking advice, here’s what to keep in mind before hitting the road.
Driving in Bournemouth is generally relaxed, but be mindful of rush hour congestion along major routes like the A338 and Wessex Way, especially near the pier and city centre. Early mornings and late afternoons can see a surge in traffic, particularly in summer when holidaymakers head in from across the country.
The standard speed limits apply here: 30 mph in built-up areas, 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Signage is clear throughout the city, and speed cameras are frequently used.
Weather is mostly temperate, though winter fog and summer beach traffic can affect visibility and flow. Hiring a compact car can make it easier to slip through narrow streets or navigate older parts of town like Boscombe or Westbourne.
Finding a parking spot in Bournemouth’s city centre can be tricky on weekends, but there are several car parks close to key attractions. Richmond Gardens Car Park, Bath Road South and the Pavilion Car Park offer convenient access to the beach, shops and gardens.
For those staying longer or looking to pay only once per day, some garages offer capped daily rates. Keep in mind that roadside parking can be strictly prohibited in areas marked as residential-only — always check signage before leaving your car.
There are no toll roads in Bournemouth or Dorset County. All local and regional routes are toll-free for visitors and locals alike.
You’ll find plenty of fuel stations across the city, with Esso, Shell and BP locations along Castle Lane East, Wallisdown Road and the A338. Many also offer basic service bays and snacks for the road.
Electric vehicles are well-supported, too. EV charging points are available at Castlepoint Shopping Park, the Sovereign Centre and several council car parks. The city’s growing EV infrastructure makes it easy to explore without compromise, especially if you're conscious of your vehicle’s range or miles between stops.
Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. From day trips to the New Forest and Durdle Door, to scenic drives along the South Coast or into nearby towns like Christchurch or Swanage, having a vehicle opens up the best of the region. Turo makes it easy to find the right fit — with options for every fuel type, duration and driving style.
