Rent a car and explore Ketchikan, AK
Whether you're catching a connecting flight to Anchorage, taking an excursion mid-cruise, or trying to discover the hidden history of the United States, there's a surprising amount to do in Ketchikan. Here are a few highlights to help you make the most of your time in the city.
Rent the perfect car
You might be surprised to learn that Alaska is home to a literal rainforest, but it's well worth a car rental to drive 20 minutes for this experience. Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary is home to everything from spruce and towering cedar trees to black bears and bald eagles. Commune with nature, or at least just take in the astounding amount of green you'll find there.
The time limit of a cruise excursion can be stressful, so why not learn about the story of Ketchikan with the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center? Pay respect to three massive totem poles representing local Native cultures, then explore the Center for interactive exhibits that walk you through the history of this charming town. You'll experience all of Ketchikan in a single spot that's perfect for children and adults alike.
Speaking of totem poles, did you know the practice faded away by the 1800s? As a result of widespread illnesses, many Native Americans left their villages and totems behind in search of better lives. What remains in Ketchikan, though, are 33 totem poles, with 16 of them permanently displayed for visitors. Pay respect to those who came before, whether you take a moment of silence in front of the poles or sign up for a basketry, weaving, or carving class.

Cruises often include shuttles to major destinations when you take an excursion. However, with the number of tourists Ketchikan sees, shuttles can take 45 minutes to an hour each way regardless of where you go. Instead of spending your precious excursion time waiting, pick up a rental car and make the most of your stay in Ketchikan.
Many tourists only visit Ketchikan for a short amount of time, whether they're on a cruise excursion or on a layover heading to Anchorage. While the city is small, there's plenty to do both in town and nearby, making the flexibility of a rental car the perfect way to take advantage of this Alaskan gem.
The city itself has some great things to do, but considering the area's temperate weather—much unlike what you might think of Alaska normally—you don't want to miss out on experiencing nature nearby. Potlatch Totem Park and Musem stands north of Ketchikan, as does Totem Bight State Historical Park, and they're both fantastic spots to unplug and explore.

Pickup near or at Airports
Whether your time in Ketchikan is short or long, you might want to rent a car to maximize your flexibility. If you're hitting the road, there are some things you'll need to know. Here are some tips for renting a car in Ketchikan.
Tongass Ave (termed Tongass Hwy outside the city) follows the shoreline at a low elevation, making drives pretty easy most of the time. Much of Ketchikan itself has a speed limit of 20 MPH, so with a little patience, you can get anywhere you want safely. The roads stay pretty clear; because Ketchikan is part of Alaska's rainforest, it stays relatively temperate. You might see snow between December and April, but there isn't often a lot, and it tends to melt quickly.
The biggest thing to note is the length of the day. During wintertime, you'll only have around 8 hours of daylight, leaving you with a lot of nighttime driving. Visit in the summer, though, and you'll see as much as 17 hours of sunlight! It can be uncanny if you're not used to it, but you'll want to keep an eye on sunrise and sunset to stay safe on the roads.
There are ample parking lots around Ketchikan proper, but be aware that many of them have time restrictions. Others require parking permits, which you can obtain at city hall. Otherwise, individual restaurants and attractions may have parking available depending on how busy the season is.
Great news—you won't find a single toll road in or near Ketchikan!
You'll want to plan your drives around Ketchikan carefully. There are a few gas stations in town, but outside of town, they're spread out along the Tongass Hwy. Planning is paramount if you rent an EV, as Ketchikan is home to just one charging station, located next to the Petro Marine Services Pier Fuel Dock.
With how crucial tourism is to the city, Ketchikan offers a variety of shuttles to and from common attractions. Because they run at specific times and have capacity limits, however, it may be a good idea to rent a car if you want to do anything outside of Ketchikan itself, such as explore the Rainforest Sanctuary or camp out in nearby national parks.
