Belfast, Ireland

Belfast City

Belfast city centre is an easy first stop, with restaurants, galleries, music venues, shops, and historic streets all close together. It’s the sort of city where you can spend the morning learning something meaningful and the afternoon eating very well. A rental car gives you flexibility if you’re staying outside the centre or planning to explore beyond the city afterwards. Just keep an eye on parking, especially during peak times.

Titanic Belfast

Titanic Belfast is one of the city’s standout attractions, with striking architecture and exhibitions that take you through the story of the ship, the people who built it, and the city behind it. It’s immersive and well designed. The surrounding Titanic Quarter is also worth exploring, with waterfront walks and plenty of places to stop nearby. Having a hire car makes it easy to build this into a wider Belfast itinerary without rushing.

Oxford Island Nature Reserve

Oxford Island Nature Reserve is a lovely option if you want fresh air, lake views, and a slower pace after the airport-and-motorway routine. Set on the shores of Lough Neagh, it’s ideal for walking, birdwatching, and stretching your legs without needing to commit to a full expedition. It’s particularly handy if you’re travelling with family or just want a peaceful stop outside the city. A rental car makes the visit far more convenient, especially if you’re combining it with other nearby locations.

Top tips for renting a car in Belfast

A little planning makes car rental in Belfast much easier, especially if you’re arriving after a long flight into Belfast City Airport or driving in Northern Ireland for the first time. Check your booking details before you travel and make sure the car you choose suits your plans. Nobody wants to discover their “cheapest car” bargain is not quite the dream match for four suitcases, three passengers, and a countryside road trip.

How does airport pickup work near Belfast International Airport?

Airport pickup on Turo is managed through your booking details in the app. Once your car hire is confirmed, you’ll receive the information you need for your specific rental location and pickup process. This helps you avoid the traditional rental counter routine with other car hire companies and get to your vehicle with less stress. It’s a smoother way to start, especially when all you really want after landing is to be in the car and on your way.

How does drop-off work near Belfast International Airport?

Drop-off details are also provided in the app and are often the same location as pickup. Before returning the vehicle, check the drop-off location, fuel or recharging requirements, and timing so you can finish the trip without last-minute scrambling. If you’ve ever tried to make a flight while also decoding car park signage, you’ll appreciate doing this bit in advance.

How far is Belfast International Airport from the city centre?

Belfast International Airport is around 18 miles from Belfast city centre, with the drive usually taking about 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic. The route is straightforward, making it easy to head into town after landing or return for your flight at the end of the trip. Having your own rental car gives you more control over timing, stops, and luggage logistics.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Belfast?

In Northern Ireland, you drive on the left, speed limits are clearly signed, and many rural roads can be narrower than visitors expect. Belfast city streets can get busy during peak times, while countryside routes may involve tighter bends, slower traffic, and the occasional tractor. Motorways and main roads are generally easy to navigate, especially between Belfast International, Belfast city centre, and other major towns. Take your time, stay aware of local speed limits, and remember that “just around the corner” can mean something quite different on a winding country road.

What is parking like in Belfast?

Parking in Belfast is manageable, but it pays to plan ahead if you’re heading into the city centre. Look for multi-storey car parks, designated car parks, and pre-bookable spaces near major attractions if you’re visiting during busy periods. Street parking can be limited in central areas, especially around popular shopping and dining streets. If you’re driving a larger vehicle, check height restrictions before committing to a covered car park and causing a very avoidable scene.

Are there toll roads in Belfast?

There are no major toll roads immediately around Belfast International Airport or central Belfast. If your journey takes you beyond Northern Ireland, check your route in advance, as tolls and payment rules can vary across countries or regions. It’s the kind of small detail that feels boring until it saves you hassle later.

Where can I find petrol stations and EV chargers in Belfast?

Petrol stations are available around Belfast International Airport, along main roads, and throughout Greater Belfast. If you’re driving an electric vehicle, you’ll find charging points across the city and at selected public locations, though it’s worth checking availability before longer journeys. Keep an eye on local fuel prices and recharging requirements before returning your car.

Do I need to rent a car in Belfast?

You can explore parts of Belfast without a car, especially around the city centre, but a rental car makes a big difference if you want to see more of Northern Ireland. Coastal drives, countryside stops, family visits, and day trips become far easier when you’re not planning your life around timetables. If your trip involves more than one destination, hiring a car is usually the more flexible choice.

What rental car types can I find on Turo in Belfast?

Car rental options around Belfast International Airport include compact cars for city driving, SUVs for family trips, electric vehicles, premium vehicles, and luxury and executive vehicles for more formal occasions. You may also find van hire options if you need extra space for luggage, business gear, or a larger load. The best car hire choice depends on your route, passengers, luggage, and how much comfort you want along the way. Choose the right vehicle now and save yourself from suitcase origami later.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Belfast?

The cost of car rental in Belfast can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car hires in Belfast, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.
