David was communicative, pickup and drop off was easy with clear instructions, car drove well, overall very satisfied with our experience. Great cost friendly alternative to bigger car rental companies with a lot more flexibility, but come with the right expectations (i.e. don't expect a squeaky clean car)

Ford MUSTANG 2016

Mr. John upgraded my rental car free of charge, which let me experience the charm of a GT for the first time. This Mustang made my Great Ocean Road trip incredibly enjoyable. Meanwhile, Mr. John thoughtfully prepared an umbrella and water in the car. I will definitely rent a car from him again when I come to Melbourne next time.

Kia CERATO 2019

The car rental process was very easy and smooth. Suraj, the owner, personally brought the car key to the meeting point, which I really appreciated. I prefer this much more than using a lockbox, as I’ve had issues with passcodes before. The car was clean, easy to use, and very comfortable to drive. Communication with the owner was excellent — he was easy to contact and replied to messages quickly. Overall, a great experience and I would definitely recommend this rental.

Holden BARINA 2013

Great car, runs smoothly and good to get around the city and out of the city on a longer haul. Some minor parts not quite at full function such as the side mirror tilting (this could be fixed by changing the angle by hand) but primarily these were cosmetic. Pick up was really easy, once I figured out the lock box, bluetooth functionality worked and car was comfortable and warm to drive, and clean to arrive at. Overall great value and great location, would rent again.

Had a great time. will definitely keep this in mind for the next time we need a rental.

MG MG3 AUTO 2024

This is possibly my new favourite thing regarding car hire, I only came across Turo last week, when I need to book a car late Sunday night for an early Monday start, and could not find any of the traditional car hire places open or able to accomodate, unless I went to the airport. I found Turo and Ajay and booked my car very late Sunday night and hoped for the best for 7am start, Ajay responded immediately, a convenient pick up location, a super convenient process, car was immaculate, and to top it all off, I was able to end the journey at my place and Ajay came and met me at mine to take back the car, so I did not have to worry about transport back to mine. Phenonemal platform and even more than phenomenal host, I willl never use a traditional car hire place again, (note here that not every Turo experience seems great with lots of hosts appearing to cancel with little notice, not Ajay) book, book, book ... highly highly recommended.

Brilliant car. Honestly one of the best ive driven. It is very fuel efficient but gutsy at the same time. This car is more than it first appears to be on the surface, genuinely loaded with features and yet it sips fuel. Would definitely drive this again so thank you to the owner for the opportunity.

Highly recommend John’s M3. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Very very special driving experience, brutal performance, luxurious interior and BMW showmanship. Has everything for a reasonable price Car was in great condition, running Kumhos on the front and cheaper Chinese tires on the back with sufficient tread and grip to have safe fun. John and his team again made the whole process really smooth and convenient. Really handy to have plenty of unlimited street parking nearby to leave your car and swap Thanks again

Top tips for renting a car in Melbourne

Renting a car in Victoria gives you the freedom to explore on your own schedule, turning your trip into a more flexible and rewarding experience. These quick tips will help you plan with clarity, protect your budget, and make the most of your time on the road: from comparing deals to choosing the right car hire option for your itinerary.

How does airport pickup work near Avalon Airport?

Pickup near Avalon Airport is refreshingly simple. Once your booking is confirmed, you’ll receive clear directions to a nearby handover point outside the terminal building. Skip the queues at traditional car hire desks and walk straight to your agreed-upon location, ready to point your wheels toward Geelong, the Melbourne CBD, or a scenic detour along the coast.

How does drop-off work near Avalon Airport?

Returning your rental car is just as easy. You’ll be given a pre-arranged drop-off location close to the airport, where you can park, gather your personal belongings, and follow the instructions provided in your reservation details. Skip the shuttles and long lines –– simply hand back the vehicle keys and continue your trip at your own pace.

How far is Avalon Airport from the CBD?

Avalon Airport sits roughly 55–60 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD, usually a 45–55 minute drive depending on traffic. A car hire gives you the freedom to bypass crowded bus routes, manage your own timing, and head straight for your accommodation or first stop in the city.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Melbourne?

Melbourne’s roads are well-signed, well-lit, and easy to navigate once you understand the rhythm of the city. Peak hour typically builds between 7:00–9:00 AM and 4:30–6:30 PM, especially along the West Gate Freeway, Monash Freeway, and major arterials leading toward Port Phillip Bay. Staying aware of these windows ensures you save time and fuel.

Victoria’s weather can shift quickly. On hotter days, keep your rental car shaded where possible and stay mindful of glare along waterfront roads. During winter, early fog around the You Yangs region and Geelong can reduce visibility, so slow your speed and increase following distance. Most urban zones sit between 40–60km/h, while freeways range from 80–100km/h.

Keep an eye on hook-turn intersections in the inner grid and watch for trams stopping at Melbourne CBD platforms. Regional highways outside the city, like the Princes Freeway and parts of the Surf Coast route, often have wildlife activity after dark, so reduce speed if you see roadside movement or reflective eyes near the verge.

What is parking like in Melbourne?

Parking availability changes from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, but the city overall offers plenty of secure, well-marked options. In the CBD, large garages like Federation Square Car Park, Wilson Parking on Flinders Lane, and Crown’s multilevel structure near the Yarra River are reliable choices with generous capacity.

If you’re exploring Fitzroy, Carlton, or South Melbourne, keep an eye out for signed council lots. Street parking can be competitive in busy restaurant strips, but early afternoons and later evenings usually offer better chances to find parking. For stadium events or weekend markets, arriving a little ahead of the crowds can save both time and stress.

Are there toll roads in Melbourne?

Yes. Melbourne’s main toll roads include CityLink and EastLink, stretching between Tullamarine, the CBD, the south-east, and the eastern suburbs.

Where can I find petrol stations and EV chargers in Melbourne?

You’ll find plenty of petrol options throughout the metro area, with Shell, BP and 7-Eleven service stations clustered along major roads like the Princes Highway, Kings Way, and Hoddle Street. Along your route to Geelong, stations sit at regular intervals, making it easy to top up before continuing your trip.

EV drivers have solid coverage too. Fast chargers are available at locations such as Melbourne Central Car Park, QV Melbourne, and Westfield Doncaster. Many suburban hubs, including Brighton, Footscray, and Richmond, also host reliable charging spots, making the city a convenient base for electric travel.

Do I need to rent a car in Melbourne?

A car hire opens up more of Victoria than public transport can comfortably reach. From the wineries of the Yarra Valley to hidden coves along the Mornington Peninsula, many of the state’s best experiences sit far beyond tram and train lines. Driving also lets travellers string together coastal lookouts, laneway food spots, and day trips without wrestling with transfers or strict timetables — ideal for visitors who want freedom baked into every kilometre.

What rental car types can I find on Turo in Melbourne?

Melbourne moves at its own rhythm and Turo has rental options to keep pace with it. From laneway cafés to surf-ready coastlines, there’s a hire car for every kind of trip. Choose from vehicle classes, including, but not limited to:

Compact car rental – Ideal for navigating tight CBD streets and inner-city parking. Think zippy favourites like the Toyota Yaris or Kia Rio.

Sedan rental – A smooth, comfortable choice for daily drives or business trips, with options like the Mazda 6 or Hyundai i30 Sedan.

Electric car rental – Great for eco-conscious visitors, charging up at stations across Southbank, Docklands and Geelong. Models like the Tesla Model 3 or Polestar 2 make Melbourne’s stop-start traffic effortless.

Mid size SUV rental – Extra room without excess bulk, perfect for family outings or weekend cruising in a mid size style vehicle like the Toyota RAV4.

Luxury SUV rental – Take the premium route in a BMW X5 or Audi Q7, combining comfort and performance for longer drives.

Van rental – Groups and extra-gear trips are easy in a spacious van like the Toyota HiAce or Hyundai Staria.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Melbourne?

The cost of car rental in Melbourne can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rental in Melbourne, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.
