Top tips for renting a car in Albany

Albany is made for exploring by car. With winding routes through the Hudson Valley, historic drives to Saratoga, and scenic backroads into the mountains, having your own ride means you can go beyond the basics. Before you leave the baggage claim area, here’s what to know about rental car pickup logistics, driving conditions, and making the most of your trip.

How does airport pickup work near Albany Airport?

At Albany Airport, car rental pickups on Turo happen just beyond the airport grounds, in off-site lots along Jetway Drive or Airport Park Boulevard. Once you’ve collected your bags from the baggage claim area, check the Turo app for exact directions to your rental car.

How does drop-off work near Albany Airport?

Drop-off is just as smooth. Make your way to the drop-off location outlined in the Turo app and return your rental car before you reach the airport. From there, simply make your way back to the airport ready to catch your departing flight.

How far is Albany Airport from Downtown Albany?

Just seven miles from downtown, Albany International Airport is a quick 15-minute drive from the city center. Skipping rideshares means more time to explore local favorites in your rental car — and with flexible options like monthly car rental, it’s easy to stay as long as you need.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Albany?

Albany’s roads are easy to navigate, though I-90, I-787, and Central Avenue get congested during weekday peaks. The area near the New York State Capitol is also busy during events. If you're picking up near Albany International Airport, allow extra time during high-traffic hours.

Winter conditions can be tricky—especially on roads like NY-85. AWD or snow-ready vehicle classes are strongly recommended. Some hosts may include extras or marketing-related expenses within listing fees, so check your rental agreement. Delays or detours may also lead to related expenses, particularly in bad weather. Speed limits vary from 30 mph in neighborhoods to 65 mph on highways. New York law requires seatbelts and bans handheld phone use. Right turns on red are allowed unless posted otherwise.

What is parking like in Albany?

Parking in Albany is relatively straightforward. Metered street parking is available near downtown hotspots like Lark Street, Pearl Street, and State Street, with most meters running Monday through Saturday. Evening and Sunday parking is typically free.

For longer visits, nearby parking garages like Green-Hudson, Riverfront, and the Empire State Plaza Visitor Lot offer covered parking close to major landmarks. Many also support EV charging and accommodate larger vehicles like SUVs.

Are there toll roads in Albany?

Yes. The New York State Thruway (I-87) and I-90 run through Albany and connect the region with Buffalo, NYC, and the Hudson Valley.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Albany?

Gas stations are clustered along Central Avenue, Western Avenue, and near the Fuller Road area. Mobil, Stewart’s, and Sunoco are the most common stations across the city. If you're headed west toward Colonie or the Crossgates area, you'll find plenty of fuel options along the way.

EV charging is widely available. Fast chargers are located at the Albany Capital Center, Crossgates Mall, and city-run garages like the OGS Plaza Garage. This network makes it easy to keep your electric car charged while exploring or during longer day trips.

Do I need to rent a car in Albany?

Albany is well-connected to scenic drives, small towns, and natural escapes — all best accessed behind the wheel of a rental car on Turo. Booking through Turo gives you flexible access to vehicle classes that match your itinerary, whether you're cruising to Saratoga Springs, heading out to Lake George, or exploring the Catskill Mountains at your own schedule.
