Top tips for renting a car in Pittsburgh

Exploring the city by car gives you convenience and flexibility, but a few handy insights can make your Pittsburgh rental car experience even smoother. From navigating narrow bridges to finding a well-placed rental location, these tips will help shape your Pittsburgh travel plans with ease.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Pittsburgh?

Driving in Pittsburgh is an experience shaped by its geography — with three rivers cutting through the city, you’ll encounter plenty of steep hills, sharp bends, and more than 400 bridges. Watch for congestion on major routes like I-376 and I-279, especially during rush hour between 7:00–9:00 AM and 4:00–6:00 PM on weekdays. These times can bring gridlock near the city center, particularly if there’s a game day at PNC Park or a Pittsburgh Steelers matchup at Acrisure Stadium.

Speed limits in residential areas typically cap at 25 mph, while highways are posted at 55–65 mph depending on the zone. During winter, snow and ice can impact visibility and traction, especially around Mount Washington and the South Hills. If you're booking a car rental in Pittsburgh during colder months, consider choosing a vehicle with all-wheel drive or winter tyres.

Thanks to Pennsylvania’s clear signage and consistent lane markings, navigating unfamiliar areas is relatively stress-free. Just be prepared for quick turns and short off-ramps, especially downtown. GPS and traffic apps are a must, and Turo’s selection of cars with tech-savvy add-ons can help make your drive more intuitive.

What is parking like in Pittsburgh?

Parking in downtown Pittsburgh can be competitive, especially on weekdays and during major events. However, there are several reliable garages like the Smithfield-Liberty Garage and the Third Avenue Garage that offer all-day spots. Near cultural hubs like the Carnegie Museum, timed street parking is available but limited.

Outside the city center, parking becomes far more accessible — making your car rental in Pittsburgh especially handy for day trips or neighborhood-hopping. Always check signage, and if you're planning a visit to popular food spots (like for those legendary French Fries at Primanti Bros), off-peak hours offer your best shot at easy street parking.

Are there toll roads in Pittsburgh?

While Pittsburgh itself doesn’t have toll roads within the city limits, nearby stretches of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) do require tolls — particularly if you're heading east toward Harrisburg or west toward Ohio.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Pittsburgh?

Finding fuel is simple, with Sheetz, Exxon, and Speedway stations scattered throughout the city. Popular stops include East Carson Street and Baum Boulevard. If you're driving electric, the city has a growing number of EV charging locations, especially in areas like Bakery Square, East Liberty, and near Pittsburgh Airport.

Apps like PlugShare can help you locate available EV chargers, and Turo makes it easy to browse electric vehicle listings suited for eco-conscious travel across nearby locations.

Do I need to rent a car in Pittsburgh?

If you want to explore beyond the reach of public transportation and truly experience the best of Steel City — from the Pittsburgh Zoo to the scenic Laurel Highlands — a car is essential. Renting with Turo gives you the freedom to skip rigid schedules, save money on rideshares, and hit the road on your own time. From downtown galleries to winding parkway drives, this city is best enjoyed with keys in hand.

When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

* Any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your protection plan, except in limited situations for trips booked in Maryland, but this protects your own wallet. In the US, liability insurance is provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. The policy does not provide coverage for damage to a host’s vehicle.

For questions or information about the third party liability insurance that is included in protection plans, consumers in Maryland and the licensed states listed here may contact Turo Insurance Agency at (415) 508-0283 or claims@turo.agency. For questions about how damage to a host’s vehicle is handled, visit the Turo Support site.

When a trip is booked in the state of Washington, physical damage to the host’s vehicle is covered by insurance purchased by Turo, but Turo’s insurance does not change the contractual responsibilities of hosts or guests with respect to physical damage to a host’s vehicle.
