Having your own vehicle provides flexibility to explore Melbourne's laneways and attractions at your own pace.
In Victoria, you must drive on the left side of the road and give way to traffic coming from your right at roundabouts. Speed limits are strictly enforced, with school zones operating during specific hours on weekdays. Mobile phone use while driving is prohibited unless hands-free, and seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers.
Melbourne features several toll roads including CityLink and EastLink, though you can reach most destinations via alternative free routes. The toll roads use electronic systems, so ensure your car hire is equipped with the necessary transponder or register for short-term usage. Many popular destinations around Moorabbin and greater Melbourne remain accessible without using toll roads.
