When taking on an epic drive like the Great Ocean Road you need the right tool for the job. This is without question the best car to make the most of this thoroughly enjoyable road trip. You will get looks from the the tourist buses. All those faces with expressions of longing and opportunity wasted. You can smile back knowing full well that they wish they were right where you are. In the driver's seat with the top down carving up the corners in some of the most stunning landscape Australia has to offer.
I recently spent a few days with a 2016 BMW 228i Luxury, driving it from the 1st to the 3rd on a trip from Sorrento to Queenscliff and back to Melbourne—and it left a strong impression. First thing you notice is how smooth and refined the drive is. The 2.0L turbo engine has plenty of punch for everyday driving, especially on open coastal roads. It’s not overly aggressive, but when you put your foot down, it responds nicely and feels lively without being harsh. The handling is where this car really shines. Through the winding roads between Sorrento and Queenscliff, it felt tight, balanced, and very controlled. You get that classic BMW feel—rear-wheel drive, solid steering feedback, and confidence through corners. It made the whole trip more enjoyable rather than just getting from A to B. Fuel economy was also pretty decent for the performance you get, especially on longer stretches of highway driving. It didn’t feel like I was sacrificing efficiency for power. If there’s any downside, it’s that the back seats are quite tight—definitely more of a 2 2 setup than a practical four-seater. Also, the ride can be a bit firm over rough roads, but that’s expected given its sporty nature. Overall, the 2016 BMW 228i Luxury is a great blend of comfort and sportiness. It’s perfect for someone who wants a premium feel with engaging driving dynamics. After a few days on the road with it, it’s easy to see why BMW has such a strong reputation for driver-focused cars. On top of that, the host Farland made the whole experience easy and smooth, which really added to the trip. Nathan

These car types offer a good balance of manoeuvrability for urban streets and comfort for longer drives. A Toyota Corolla or similar model would be suitable for most trips around the city and suburbs. If you're planning to explore the Dandenong Ranges or venture further into rural Victoria, consider a small SUV for added versatility. Electric vehicles are gaining popularity in Melbourne, with charging stations becoming more prevalent. For families or groups, a larger vehicle like a Nissan X-Trail might be more appropriate. When driving in unfamiliar locations like Box Hill South, it's crucial to prioritise safety. Familiarise yourself with local traffic rules and road signs before setting out. In Australia, driving is on the left side of the road. Obey speed limits, which are typically 50 km/h in built-up areas unless otherwise signed. Be extra cautious at roundabouts and intersections, giving way to the right. Watch for pedestrians and cyclists, especially in busy areas. Use your vehicle's GPS or a reliable map app to navigate, but avoid operating your phone while driving. Stay alert for trams in Melbourne's inner suburbs and always give them right of way. If you're unsure about a route, it's better to pull over safely and check directions rather than making last-minute decisions. Lastly, always wear your seatbelt and ensure all passengers do the same.
Planning an enjoyable road trip from Box Hill South to other parts of Victoria starts with selecting interesting destinations and mapping out your route. Consider exploring the Great Ocean Road for stunning coastal views, or head to the Grampians for hiking and wildlife spotting. Research points of interest along your chosen route, such as historic towns, national parks, or local attractions. Ensure your vehicle is suitable for the journey, particularly if venturing into rural areas. Pack essentials like snacks, water, and a first-aid kit. Download offline maps or bring a physical map as backup. Plan regular breaks to avoid fatigue, taking advantage of scenic lookouts or quaint country towns. Check weather forecasts and road conditions before departing. Remember to fuel up before leaving Box Hill South and identify petrol stations along your route. With proper planning, your Victorian road trip can be a memorable adventure.
Driving in Box Hill South differs significantly from navigating rural Victorian backroads. In Box Hill South, you'll encounter more traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, and generally slower speed limits. The urban environment requires constant awareness of other vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. In contrast, rural backroads often have higher speed limits but require caution due to potential wildlife, especially at dawn and dusk. Rural roads may be narrower, with fewer overtaking opportunities and sometimes unpaved surfaces. While Box Hill South has ample street lighting, rural areas can be quite dark at night, necessitating extra care. Weather impacts are more pronounced on country roads, with potential for flooding or bushfire hazards. In Box Hill South, you'll find frequent petrol stations and services, whereas these can be sparse in rural Victoria, requiring more planning for longer trips.
For long-distance driving adventures starting from Box Hill South, guests should prepare several essentials. A reliable map or updated GPS is crucial for navigation, especially in areas with poor mobile reception. Pack plenty of water and non-perishable snacks to stay hydrated and energised. Bring a spare tyre, jack, and basic tools for any unexpected vehicle issues. A first-aid kit is vital for safety. Consider packing a mobile phone charger or power bank to ensure communication ability. Sunglasses and sunscreen are important for protection during long drives. Comfortable clothing and a light jacket are advisable for changing weather conditions. If venturing into remote areas, extra fuel in a properly sealed container might be necessary. Lastly, research your route beforehand, noting locations of petrol stations and rest areas to plan your stops effectively.
