Was a nice car but that 91 gas killed the experience paying nearly the rental cost in refueling was not great

Extremely Disappointing Experience with JB Midwest Rentals
Key Issues Experienced
1. Key Fob Did Not Work From the Start:
- The vehicle was delivered with the engine already running, so I didn’t discover the key fob was non-functional until after the handoff. When I notified the host, their response was in quote, "With rams, dodges, and jeeps normally if the key gets cold it usually just needs to warm up a little and will work. I'm assuming with they key being in the lock box it did want to work because it was cold." The temperature during our trip was between 20–50°F—nothing extreme—and warming it had no effect.
- I ended up buying a new battery for the fob out of my own pocket, which still didn’t fix the problem. After telling the host this, they simply stopped responding.
2. Vehicle Was Completely Dead the Next Morning:
- We drove to Iowa and manually locked the doors since the key fob still didn’t work. The next day, the vehicle was totally dead and wouldn’t start.
- The host offered no assistance and told me to contact Turo. Turo sent a tow truck to jump-start it. After that jump, the check engine light came on and the door locks stopped functioning entirely, both inside and with the fob.
3. Vehicle Died a Second Time the Same Day
- Later that evening in a parking garage, the vehicle died again. Turo estimated a 60–90 minute wait for another jump.
- We were stranded in the cold until strangers offered assistance and helped jump the vehicle a second time.
- At that point, we lost complete confidence that the vehicle would make it through another night, and we were forced to end our trip early. We had to drive home that night taking shifts in the vehicle during our stops because we couldn't turn it off again. We had to forfeit a night in our hotel that we already paid for and could not get refunded.
Final Recommendation:
- Once I got home, I put a battery pack on it for awhile and it solved the issues after charging the battery. Which tells me that all JB Midwest had to do was properly prepare the vehicle for the customer but they chose not to. What could have been completely avoided with a little attention to detail by them was skipped at the expense of a customer and ruined our trip.
I would STRONGLY advise staying away from JB Midwest Rentals.
The vehicle was unreliable, the communication unhelpful, and the overall experience was a major disruption to our trip.
