Needed a last minute vehicle due to a mechanical problem with my vehicle the day we were supposed to leave for a family roadtrip/vacation.

Reservation was accepted immediately and vehicle was ready lickety-split.

Vehicle was in great condition and ran smoothly. I wouldn’t hesitate to rent it again if I needed a pickup for a day.

I’m giving 3/5 stars because while I was able to use the truck and get my group to and from our destination, there were definitely some disappointing issues and inconveniences during my experience.

When I booked this rental, I selected airport pickup and dropoff. Instead, the host required me to visit their home both times, presented as “convenience,” though it involved a 10 minute drive (traffic and construction) and contradicted my booking. For pickup, despite my providing flight info and location updates per their request, they arrived 15 minutes late anyway. All in all, not as convenient as it would have been if we just did the direct airport pick up. My friends rented a different truck through Turo during the same trip and had zero issues with direct airport pickup and dropoff.

A pretty major problem was the battery.
The truck had a persistently dead battery. Every single drive required the portable jumper. We even had to recharge that thing mid-trip. Thankfully the host had that in the truck, but something tells me it was due to a known issue as a previous guest reported this in back in January. The host claimed it was serviced, but the issue was clearly unresolved. This is a reliability issue that makes the car unsuitable for a rental.

One day before dropoff, the host cancelled the promised airport ride, citing a personal commitment (to take their child to the circus). I was still required to drop the car at their home and then Uber to the airport (they reimbursed me later). This added 30 unnecessary minutes to my return process as I had to drop everyone plus all the luggage at the airport, gas the truck back up, do the drop off process and then order an uber back to the airport.

Because of the battery issue inconvenience, I asked if I could just leave the car at the airport short term parking lot/garage for my group’s convenience. The host told me it was unsafe to leave the truck at the airport parking with keys hidden. However, at their home, I was instructed to simply lock the keys inside the car since they had a spare set. That safety concern evaporated the moment it was inconvenient for them, making it clear the airport policy was about their preference, not security.

The truck was clean and mechanically sound once jumpstarted, but that doesn’t excuse the core problems: a malfunctioning battery and inflexible pickup/dropoff requirements masked as benefits.

I’d recommend the host resolve the battery issue before renting again and honor the booking terms as specified in the app or don’t offer it as an option.

Overall this was probably our most disappointing Turo experience. While airport pickup was offered, we were not aware that we would have to drop the host off at her house. This could have been an issue with seating if our group did not have another car.

We all noticed a strong marijuana smell when we got in the truck. It is possible that this was from a previous guest, but present nonetheless.

We also had an issue with a dead battery during our trip which another customer had just a few weeks ago, so clearly this was an issue that had not been resolved. When we jumped the truck there was a trickle charger still attached to the battery and hanging down in the engine and the terminals were very loose which could have been dangerous.
