This was by far the worst rental experience I’ve ever had.

We were given a car that was unsafe to drive because one of the tires was severely worn. This wasn’t a puncture or damage that happened during our trip—it was a tire that had clearly been worn down over a long period of time. A basic safety inspection before handing over the vehicle should have identified this immediately. The fact that it was rented out in this condition is completely unacceptable.

As soon as we discovered the issue, we went straight to a tire shop to have it replaced. Unfortunately, because the car was a newer model, replacement tires were difficult to source. We then went to the host’s office, where we were told it would take another 3–4 hours to replace the tire.

By that point, our entire day had already been ruined. We had already paid for tickets to a park that morning and had a non-refundable lunch reservation. Because of the unsafe condition of the vehicle, we were unable to make it to either and lost money on both the park tickets and our lunch reservation. Instead of enjoying our vacation, we spent hours driving between a tire shop and the host’s office trying to fix a vehicle that should never have been rented out.

With no reasonable solution and no certainty about when the car would be safe to drive again, we had no choice but to end our trip early and return the vehicle.

I requested a full refund, which I believe was the bare minimum given that the rental car was unsafe. The host told me they had “done their best” but that refunds were handled by Turo. Despite everything that happened, I still did not receive a full refund.

To make matters worse, the host initially tried to deny responsibility by claiming they “never knew about the tire issue.” That explanation simply doesn’t make sense. Tires do not become severely worn overnight. Their condition was the result of prolonged wear, meaning the vehicle was either never properly inspected or obvious safety issues were ignored before it was rented to us.

I also requested compensation for the money we lost, the day that was completely ruined, and the significant inconvenience caused by this situation. Despite following up, I have not received any response.

No customer should have to worry about whether the rental car they receive is safe to drive. This experience cost us valuable vacation time, money, and peace of mind. I cannot recommend renting from this host based on my experience.
