I was not going to leave a review stating all of this, but every person I told this story to said that I should warn others and be honest about my experience.

The car had the check engine light on when I picked it up. The host said it was still drivable and I need not worry about it.
I had to be at a meeting in Tennessee within 5 hours so against my better judgement I continued with the pick up.

3 hours into my drive I stop to refuel the car and when I get back in, the car would not start.
At this point I was an hour out from my destination.
There were not any jumper cables in the car so I had to ask a random man at the gas station if he had any and if he could jump start the car.
I message the host over the app letting him know what's going on. He calls me on my cell and I explain it again and tell him I have videos of what the car was doing.
He tells me to text them to the phone number that he called me from.

I go straight to the hotel, I park the car and do not touch it for the 3 days I was there except to crank it once each day to make sure it would actually start.
I completely avoid using the car and use Uber the entire time I'm there to avoid any further issues.

For my trip home, it started fine.
I drove 2.5 hours and stopped to refuel. Again the car would not start. I try 3 or 4 times and it keeps flashing an error code saying I need to manually restart but everytime I try to crank the car, nothing happens. I wait 15 minutes then try again and it cranks. I let the host know that I will be unable to return the car with a full tank of gas because I'm afraid of it not starting again if I make another stop for gas.

After I return the car, the host texts me and apologizes for the "less than ideal experience." He offers me an uber gift card.
I explain that I do not use Uber, I have a car but as it has some issues I wanted to rent a car that would be safe and not give me issues for the trip. I tell him that this situation cost me more money than I had budgeted because I had to use Uber for my 3 days there and buy jumper cables for my trip back in case it broke down again.
I told him that if he wanted to make it right, I felt like a partial refund or a Turo credit to be used with any host in the future would be okay.
He sent me a $50 Turo gift card.

The $50 isn't even half of what I spent on the jumper cables and Ubers.

The whole situation was disappointing, stressful and caused me way more anxiety than if I had just taken my own car.

The host swore he just had the car checked and okayed from Pepboys before I got it. Maybe it was a fluke or Pepboys messed something up.

After this trip, I strongly feel that Turo should not allow hosts to rent out cars with any issue lights on.
Just sharing my experience of the trip.
Hope yours is better than mine!

Timothy's response

Hi Courtney, I’m very sorry your trip didn’t go smoothly. The car was recently inspected and showed no drivability issues, and I tried to stay in communication and support you as soon as you reported the check-engine light and starting problems. After your trip I began diagnosing it, replaced one part, and I’m continuing repairs until the root cause is fully resolved. I also offered the $50 Turo credit as a gesture of goodwill, I’m sorry to hear it didn’t fully offset the inconvenience.
