The vehicle itself was fine and functioned as expected during my trip. There was a noticeable smell in the car (almost like cigarettes) and it was out of windshield washer fluid, but neither issue significantly impacted the drive.
My concerns were primarily with the pickup and drop-off process. Instead of picking up a parked vehicle, I had to coordinate a curbside handoff at the airport with the owners. This did not give me an opportunity to properly inspect the vehicle, take photos, or familiarize myself with it before starting a two-hour drive. I was also required to text my arrival time about 30 minutes before reaching the airport. Since I was traveling alone and had limited cell service during part of the drive, this was difficult to coordinate and created an expectation to communicate while driving, which I was not comfortable with.
The return process was even more stressful. I had to locate and hand the keys to someone I had never met and then wait until they arrived before I could proceed into the airport. As a solo traveler, this made me uncomfortable and felt much less secure than a standard parked-vehicle return. It also required me to wait until they arrived before I could go through TSA which did delay me a bit.
While the car itself was adequate, the pickup and drop-off arrangements made the overall experience stressful and prevented me from completing the normal inspection and check-in/check-out process. Because of that, I would not choose to rent from this host again.
