The exterior of the car was dirty, the car only had half a tank of fuel, the CarPlay feature did not work. One of my main criteria for renting this vehicle was the CarPlay feature.

Welton Street's response

Tips for anyone reading this review:

Because storms can blow through Denver quickly, ALL CARS on our platform have a wash pass that allow access to every Cobblestone Carwash in the state of Colorado. This is standard for us.

The CarPlay works on the Q5 2020. Unsure what occurred with this guest - https://youtu.be/lVfsmgPirms

As with any Turo booking, the guest is only responsible for returning the car with the gas you began the ride with. And we can refuel the car for you upon your return.

Car was in good shape. But the service was worse than a rental car company.

First, the owner freaked out when I didn’t purchase Turo’s liability insurance. This is expressly NOT required by Turo in order to rent a car. However, the owner contacted me less than 24 hours before my reservation to ask about the Turo insurance. When I told him I didn’t get it, he implied he wouldn’t follow through with my reservation unless I put his car on my own insurance. Mind you, I’ve already started my vacation and was forced to take time out to call my insurance company just to get this straightened out. If this was a requirement for the owner, he should have said so in his posting or contacted me more in advance so I wouldn’t have wasted my vacation time dealing with my car insurance. I almost never opt in to the Turo liability insurance and I’ve never had a Turo owner request this of me.

Second, the pick-up process is not safe. The owner leaves the car parked on the city street for pick up. This forced me to literally stand in traffic lanes in order to take pictures of the car and complete the pick-up inspection. It’s very unsafe. Every other Turo I’ve rented had the car waiting in a parking lot or garage where you can safely inspect the car without having to stand directly in traffic.

Third, the owner doesn’t not give you instructions on how to access the car in advance of pick-up. You actually have to go to the car, take a picture of yourself with the car, and send it to the owner before he gives you instructions about where to get the car keys. It’s not streamlined. Every other Turo owner I’ve dealt with gives you all of these instructions at least 15 minutes before your reservation so you know what to expect ahead of time.

Finally, a small nitpick, but the Turo owner did not seem like a private person but some sort of rental company using Turo. Their name sounds like a company and not a person. Twice while messaging me they described a different car than the one I was renting. It’s basically big box customer service with all of the hassles included.

Again, I had no complaints about the car
itself, but I would definitely not recommend this Turo based on the service.

Welton Street's response

For clarification, the insurance chat was intended to protect you, not us. Turo protects host cars. But when guests decline all available coverage, they assume all financial responsibility if they are found at-fault in an accident.

We are a husband and wife owned company with several lux cars. We work to protect many of our customers many of whom are locals who rent repeatedly.

Our pick up at the Ritz-Carlton has never been called unsafe as cameras and staff are 24/7 watching the process.

This is my 3rd time renting with Welton St Cars, would definitely recommend for your next trip to Denver! I’ve rented the BMW X5, Audi Q5 and BMW X3 - all great cars, very clean and in great condition. Pick-up/drop-off at Union Station is easy and convenient to take the train from the airport. Willis is really nice and great to rent from!
