All was well...until it wasn't. 4 days into the rental I made 2 small (less than half an inch) and light (only PPF) scratches on the door. I reached out to the host proactively to apologise and let them know rather than wait for the end of the rental. Omar was really aggressive and tried to scam me into paying him $2000 directly instead of filing a Turo damage claim, and without providing a corresponding offer from a repairshop. I asked for a couple of hours to contact my insurance and think about the best course of action (and mentioned I was at a Christmas day family event) but he harassed me with multiple calls and several messages on WhatsApp (instead of Turo chat), ultimately giving me 30min to agree or he would come to take back the car. After insisting he provide proof of the repair cost estimate, all he could do was send a screenshot from his friend saying it could cost $500-1000. I told him i would pay max $500 and end the rental 4 days early - anything else would have to go through the official Turo claims process. He agreed and pocketed the $500 (big jump from the $2000 he tried to force me to pay). Both his Turo and car rental agency (Caliber Luxury Rentals) have only 5-star reviews - pretty suspicious that no one else would have had a <5-star experience. I would upload pictures of scratch and screenshots of his messages as proof if I could (will do so on Google listing).
You reported damage during the trip while the vehicle was still in your possession. Based on the photos, the damage appeared to include paint, not just PPF, which explains the initial estimate. Given your $3,000 Turo deductible, I offered options to reduce your cost. After a professional estimate of $500–$1,000, you chose to end the trip early and pay $500, which I accepted. This matter was handled responsibly and in good faith.
