Regarding the car and host: The car was clean, and the instructions were straightforward. The host responded promptly. After driving, I noticed the car struggles a bit with heavy loads, strong winds, and speeds over 75 mph. I’ve driven a Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna before, which seem more stable, but this is only a concern if you’re very particular about it. Otherwise, the vehicle is good.

About Turo: The rental experience and price are nice, but there are hidden caveats with Turo rentals. The rental price itself isn’t the whole story, as additional hidden taxes and fees can significantly increase the cost. Since it’s a third-party service, credit cards don’t cover insurance, so we had to take additional insurance, which is an extra cost.

As these are individual owners, there are strict return window time requirements. You can’t return the car whenever you want; you have to request a change and get it approved. This isn’t the case with rental companies, and if it’s outside the typical window of 8 AM - 6 PM, you need to return it at a different location, which often isn’t mentioned in the rental details. This was a surprise to me, meaning additional Uber costs to get back to the airport or other destinations.

Mileage is another issue. You typically get a fixed number of miles, and anything above is charged. Usually, for 100 miles, you get charged $25, though some rates are higher and some lower. If you want to be flexible with your trip, this is another headache to avoid.

After considering all these situations, I’d rather prefer rental companies located in airports than Turo. It’s just that we have to book in advance to get cheaper rates.
