I rented this car during a snowstorm in the Midwest, and unfortunately on the way back I damaged the front bumper due to the severe weather. I immediately reported the issue to the host. The host asked if I had protection, and I told him I had the minimum Turo policy. He mentioned that Turo would charge me the deductible regardless of the actual repair cost and suggested we settle the damage off-platform. Based on that information, I initially agreed.
However, two days later the host sent me an invoice for $1,690, claiming the car needed a new sensor, calibration, and more—despite the only visible damage being the front grille area. The amount seemed excessive, so I offered to have the repair done at a reputable shop I personally knew, only 30 minutes away. The host declined.
At that point, We decided it was best to go through Turo directly. Turo’s inspection found that only the front bumper needed repair, which was much more in line with what I had expected from the start.
My advice to all renters: Always use Turo’s protection and keep all damage claims within the Turo platform. Some hosts may try to settle privately, but that can lead to inflated repair costs. Turo handled the situation fairly and professionally, and I’m glad I ultimately went through them.
Additionally, the host claims the car gets 36 mpg, but during my trip—about 500 miles of mostly freeway driving—it never went above 27 mpg.
Overall, the car drove fine, but the damage process and mileage discrepancy left me disappointed. I hope this helps future renters make informed decisions.
The vehicle was returned with damage, which was reported. The guest declined protection coverage and did not carry personal insurance, then requested an informal settlement. At no point did I suggest resolving this off the Turo platform. I obtained a professional repair estimate from my trusted shop; the guest instead proposed a significantly lower amount and asked to use a distant relative’s shop. The claim was handled through Turo, which confirmed the repairs. Retaliatory review after refusal!
