Start by mapping charging stations along your route, particularly between major towns, as Hawaii's electric car rental infrastructure is still developing outside urban areas. Plan shorter daily distances than you might with gas rental cars, allowing extra time to locate and use charging facilities throughout Maui. Check your electric rental car's range capabilities and identify backup charging locations, especially when venturing to remote destinations like Hana where charging options are limited.
Hana has very limited public charging infrastructure, so planning ahead is essential for electric rental car travelers visiting this remote area. Some accommodations in the Hana area may offer charging facilities for guests, though availability varies significantly. Consider charging your electric rental car fully in Kahului or Paia before beginning the journey to Hana, as the return trip requires sufficient battery capacity.
Fast charging stations can replenish an electric rental car battery to 80% capacity in 30-60 minutes, while regular charging typically takes several hours for a full charge. Tesla Superchargers and other DC fast charging networks provide rapid charging speeds ideal for road trips, whereas Level 2 chargers work best for overnight stays. Regular charging is gentler on battery systems and often more cost-effective, making it suitable for extended stops in destinations like Hana.
