1-Star Review – Safety Concerns Made This Trip Impossible
I rented a 2023 Tesla Model 3 from Dec 17–Dec 20 for a trip to Seattle, and unfortunately this was one of the most stressful and unsafe rental experiences I’ve had. I rarely leave 1-star reviews, but the safety issues with this car forced me to cut my trip short and turn back three-quarters of the way into what was supposed to be a highlight drive to Leavenworth.
1) Severe alignment issues (major safety risk) - From the moment I got on the highway, it was clear something was seriously wrong with the alignment. The car pulled aggressively to the far right, and I had to constantly fight the steering wheel just to stay in my lane. This became genuinely dangerous once we hit stormy, rainy December weather in Washington.
At highway speeds, especially on wet roads, the car felt unstable and unpredictable, making lane control extremely difficult. The combination of rain, wind, and the alignment issue made the drive feel unsafe enough that we decided to turn around and abandon the Leavenworth portion of our trip entirely. I did not feel confident continuing in those conditions with a car that couldn’t track straight.
2) Extremely low tire pressure in winter conditions - When I checked the tire pressures, they were far below what’s safe for Seattle winter weather:
Front Driver: 37 PSI
Front Passenger: 37 PSI
Rear Left: 37 PSI
Rear Right: 42 PSI
For December conditions, a Tesla Model 3 typically needs around 40–45 PSI, especially since cold temperatures naturally reduce tire pressure. Driving with underinflated tires in rain created a very unstable ride, and I personally experienced:
- Reduced traction and grip on wet roads
- Increased steering instability, especially at higher speeds
- Poor overall handling that made the car feel “floaty” and unsafe
Under-inflation in these conditions increases the risk of hydroplaning, uneven braking, and loss of control; none of which should ever be an issue in a rental vehicle, especially one marketed as premium.
3) Wiper blades were ineffective in heavy rain - To make matters worse, the wiper blades clearly needed replacement. In heavy rain, they failed to properly clear the windshield, leaving streaks and reducing visibility when it mattered most. Combined with the alignment and tire issues, this only added to the overall safety risk while driving in poor weather.
Overall Experience:
Between the dangerous alignment, unsafe tire pressures, and poor visibility from worn wipers, this vehicle should not have been on the road in winter conditions, let alone rented out. What should have been a memorable trip turned into a stressful and disappointing experience that forced us to change plans for safety reasons.
For these reasons, my experience is a 1-star rating, and I strongly recommend that this car be thoroughly inspected and serviced before being rented to anyone else. Safety should never be optional.
Thank you for sharing the feedback. We are sorry to hear about your experience. We took the car to Tesla Service and checked every aspect you mentioned. It turned out none of these have any problems. They mentioned since you have FSD you might feel the car being “pulled” as a similar feeling of mis-alignment. And it would be better if you can communicate to your host in your future rentals when you see any problems.
